The Swill Milk scandal of 1850 🐄😷
In New York, some dairies were feeding cows toxic distillery waste (called “swill”) and producing milk that was thin, sickly, and often pale bluish-white. To hide how weak it was, producers adulterated it with water, flour, chalk, and even plaster of Paris. An estimated 8,000 infants were lost in one year. It was food fraud on a massive scale.
Fast-forward to today. Milk is still one of the most commonly adulterated foods in the world. It can be diluted with water or even spiked with chemicals like melamine or urea to fake protein content. Obviously, that’s not legal in the U.S., and our country does a decent job of regulating this.
But in other parts of the world, it still happens. Even as recently as 2026, authorities in Gujarat, India busted a factory producing milk mixed with detergent powder, urea fertilizer, and other toxic chemicals for nearly five years.
Knowing where your food comes from should be the norm for everyone. The milk my CSA receives comes from a local farm where a good friend of mine (a livestock vet) says it’s one of the few dairies he feeds his own family.
I drink pints of this milk every day. Probably more than water, and I feel incredible. I go through at least two gallons a week on my own, and I have complete peace of mind drinking it.
This is the beauty of eating local and knowing your farmers. Can you say that about the milk in your fridge? Even the milk alternatives?
If you’re in the Indy metro area, care about transparency, and want this kind of milk you can feel good about feeding your family, comment ‘CSA’ and I’ll DM you with more details.
And if you’re not local , find your farmers near you! It takes a simple search on your favorite browser, then reach out and see if they offer tours! Learn about their practices, and support them if they align with your beliefs.
