A semicolon (;) tattoo is a symbol of hope, strength, and continuing life. It comes from the idea in writing: a semicolon is used when a sentence could end, but the writer chooses to continue it. In the same way, the tattoo represents: * “My story isn’t over yet.” * Choosing to keep going during tough times * Overcoming struggles like depression, anxiety, or emotional pain It became widely known through Project Semicolon, a movement started to support people dealing with mental health challenges. 💭 In simple words: It means you paused… but didn’t stop. If someone has this tattoo, it’s usually something very personal—either their own journey or support for someone else.

This is your sign to get that tattoo you’ve been putting off✨ As a Nigerian woman, tattoos have always felt extremely taboo. But the more I embrace my authenticity, the more I realize I’m an artist at heart, and self-expression is essential to me. This tattoo holds deep meaning. It wasn’t just a spontaneous decision—it was the result of carrying several ideas for over a year before finally committing. Why a butterfly? I know it’s a bit cliché for a girl, but it’s significant to me. One of my daughter’s first words was ‘butterfly,’ and the symbol represents transformation, rebirth, and growth—everything I’ve experienced. I also feel a strong connection to the phoenix, so I asked my artist to incorporate phoenix tails, which symbolize rising from the ashes, renewal, and resilience. Another important element is the number 222, which resonates with me for its connection to wisdom and spiritual growth. It’s mentioned 222 times in the Bible, adding even more significance. The stars and moon represent one of my favorite quotes: ‘Shoot for the moon, and if you don’t make it, you’ll still land among the stars.’ This symbolizes my aspirations and determination to keep reaching for my dreams, no matter how far they may seem. Finally, the hidden semicolon in the butterfly’s wings symbolizes my mental health journey. Inspired by the ‘Project Semicolon’ movement, it represents resilience, hope, and the choice to continue through life’s challenges. It reminds me that even when life felt like it was over, I chose to keep going. This tattoo is my reminder of not only the struggles I’ve faced but also my strength and resilience. I’m so grateful to @jeffytattoos at @brightsidetattooshop for bringing my vision to life more beautifully than I could have ever imagined. 🥹 #baltimoretattooartist #tattooideas
"A semicolon tattoo is a symbol used primarily to represent mental health awareness and resilience, signifying the choice to continue one's story despite facing challenges like depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts; it is often associated with the "Project Semicolon" movement, where the semicolon represents pausing before continuing a sentence, meaning the person has chosen to keep going instead of ending their life." Regardless of if we're in or out of cosplay, we are still us. Our tattoos and scars don't go away. We are all just a person, just like everyone else, under all that makeup and that costume. If you are reading this, know you are not alone. Especially this holiday season. You are so loved and cherished. The world wouldn't be as bright without you in it. I know I don't talk about it much but I was one of those people who also didn't want to be in the world anymore. I know firsthand how dark and scary it is being there and how endless that deep, crushing hole in your chest feels. Change is difficult and scary but it doesn't always mean it's bad. Change can happen. You are not alone. We have our comfort characters for a reason. Cosplay is a form of self-expression and can used to discover pieces of yourself you never thought existed. I relate to Lucifer from Hazbin Hotel for many reasons. Reasons, I know the fandom understands down to it's very core, cause a good portion of us have been alone and abandoned, and feeling like the world is coming down on us. This is why cosplay can be therapeutic. Working through and expressing these emotions through a form of art and self-expression is so good for you and can be life changing. Lastly, if you are reading this, again know. You are loved. By me, your friends, and by so many people you don't even know that look forward to seeing you smile everyday. ❤️
April 16 is World Semicolon Day, which recognizes suicide survivors and aims to raise awareness and offer support for all those who are experiencing mental health challenges. Project Semicolon was founded by Amy Bleuel in 2013, as a tribute to her father, who died by suicide in 2003. Why are we here? "Just" great coffee? Not exactly. It is the Radix House culture and mission to support communities through conversation and education on the topic of PTSD and mental health to stop these leading causes of death in our communities. We do so by providing the best customer experience whether it be through enjoying our amazing coffee, someone trying hemp-based solutions for the first time and/or providing information regarding resources. The normalization of mental health conversations is critical for people to get the help they need and it's why we're proud to be one of the main sponsors for the Administration for Suicide Prevention in Central Texas. At our Out of the Darkness Community Walks, friends, family members, neighbors and coworkers walk side by side, supporting each other and remembering those we’ve lost. Join us and be part of the movement to create a world without suicide.
