Big news for the West Side 🚧🌿 The next phase of the Ninth Avenue redesign is officially happening — bringing a new “super sidewalk” to Hell’s Kitchen and transforming the corridor from West 34th Street to West 50th Street into a safer, greener, more people-centered street. This has been a long time coming. After delivering Phase 1, we worked alongside Community Board 4 to push the City to move forward — and now it’s happening. Here’s what’s coming: 🚶‍♂️ 9 feet of new pedestrian space 🚲 A wider, protected bike lane (nearly doubling in size) 🚌 A red-painted, enforced bus lane for faster service 🛑 New pedestrian safety islands at key intersections And the need is real: 37 people were killed or seriously injured on this stretch in just the past few years. Construction is already underway and will continue through the summer. This is about reimagining Ninth Avenue for the people who actually use it every day — and making our streets safer, more livable, and more vibrant. I attended a wonderful event last night supporting one of the best art fairs in the country — right here in my beloved neighborhood of Old Town. Old Town is more than just another Chicago neighborhood. It’s a true community. It’s a place where people give back — not just to the neighborhood, but to other communities across the city. It’s a place where you know that within a couple doors of your home, there’s a neighbor who would help you with just about anything. And you know it’s special because once people move into Old Town… they almost never leave. At gatherings like these, you hear stories of all the different homes people have lived in throughout the neighborhood over the years — moving from one block to another, one street to the next — but rarely leaving the community itself. Last night we also honored an incredible woman who has given so much to this neighborhood over the years, Vi Daley. Old Town is lucky to have had her… and that legacy will live on.
Big things are happening on Calder Way! We’re updating the utilities beneath the streets - water, gas, and sewer lines — because the infrastructure under your feet is over 100 years old. These improvements are part of a plan to make downtown safer, more reliable, and easier to enjoy. It might look a little messy today, but the long-term vision for Calder Way is bright – improved lighting, stamped pavement, and a dedicated bike lane will transform it into a beautiful shared corridor everyone can enjoy. Construction today means a brighter, more welcoming downtown tomorrow. Do Something Constructive. Visit downtown.
Celebrating 150 years of Hayward! 🎉 The community came together at City Hall Plaza to celebrate this special milestone, and it was great seeing so many familiar faces while also meeting new ones along the way. Events like this remind me how strong and connected our city really is. There was plenty of entertainment, activities for families and kids, and just an overall great vibe celebrating the history and future of Hayward. And if you’re out exploring the city, make sure to stop by the @haywardareahistory . There’s currently an art show running now through June 12th, and I’m honored to have my artwork included and on display as part of the exhibit celebrating Haywards 150th Anniversary 🎨 Make sure to check it out and support the arts in our community! You can visit at: 📍 22380 Foothill Blvd, Hayward, CA 94541 🕒 Hours: Thursday – Saturday 11 AM – 3 PM It’s always special seeing local history and art come together in one place. If you’re in the area, swing by and take a look! 🙌 #Hayward150 #HaywardCA #HaywardArts #SupportLocalArt #HaywardHistoricalSociety LocalArtists EastBayArts ArtInTheCommunity

Growing up I often heard the slogan “Bed-Stuy, Do or Die” associated with the rougher edges of the 1980s. But looking back, that phrase was actually a call to action for community organization. The groups mentioned in this video are legendary, but they are just examples of a much larger ecosystem. Countless block associations, religious groups, and local activists did the heavy lifting during the decades of hardship in Bed-Stuy. If this interests you, and you’d like to learn more about these organizations comment“‼️” #bedstuy #bedstuydoordie #nychistory
Did you know this unassuming building at 41-05 Newtown Road is one of the oldest political clubs in the country? Its roots go back over a century, with mentions dating as far back as days of Mayor Seth Low. While much of the neighborhood has changed, the club’s building still shows architectural details from the early 1900s. It’s named after Chief Powhatan (Wahunsenacawh), the father of Pocahontas a nod to deep American history and heritage. For over 120+ years, the Powhatan & Pocahontas Democratic Club has been a hub for civic engagement in Astoria organizing meetings, voter registration, and community events all across the neighborhood. We read that The Powhatan Democratic Club was the home base for Congressman James J. Delaney who served as our Representative from January, 1949 through December, 1978 - he also resided in the neighborhood. According to a February, 1975 New York Times article the building was purchased by the Congressman’s father (himself politically involved) for $2500.00 in 1908.
