Prussian blue formation in a water droplet 🌊💙
The iron(II) crystal had partially oxidized in air, creating a mix containing iron(III) ions. It’s this oxidized "contaminant" that reacts immediately with the ferrocyanide to precipitate this vivid dark blue.

💧 A drop of water, a classic reaction 💧
Inside this tiny droplet, potassium ferrocyanide meets ferrous sulfate — and chemistry paints its signature deep blue.
No tricks, no filters. Just ions finding each other in water and forming a compound that changed analytical chemistry forever.
This is how reactions look when you slow down and really watch them.

Prussian Blue has a story as rich as its color 💙
Discovered by accident in the early 1700s, this deep, moody blue quickly became one of the most beloved pigments in art history. With its dramatic depth and beautiful granulation, it creates stunning shadows, oceans, and night skies.
At Brighter Day Pigments, our handmade watercolor version lets this classic color shine with incredible flow and intensity—just a tiny bit goes a long way.

Did Picasso really paint with blood? 🩸
Prussian Blue is one of the most important pigments in art history, it was discovered by accident in the early 1700s when a pigment maker borrowed a material contaminated by a chemist neighbor who was distilling animal blood to make “Dippel’s Oil”.
Instead of red… he got blue.
The pigment became known as Prussian Blue because it was used in Prussian military uniforms, and it changed art forever. Before this, ultramarine was more expensive than gold, and pigments like indigo was the lightfast and Egyptian blue could not be made anymore, so suddenly artists could actually afford blue.
Artists like Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, and Katsushika Hokusai all used it.
And it gets crazier: studying Prussian blue helped lead to cyanide chemistry, early cyanotype photography, and today it’s even used as a medicine for certain poisonings.
Art history is wild.
Also the color mixes I made the painting with are:
Prussian blue + raw umber = chromatic black used for the swan
Prussian blue + yellow ochre = olive green for the water shadows
Prussian blue + permanent crimson = deep purple for the swan also
Prussian blue + white = sky blue for the water reflections (i mixed crimson to make it purpley as well

Imprimatura is the first colored layer in a painting, over which I will paint the subject.
1. It sets the tone for the entire painting.
2. It unifies a series of works.
I use a shade of Prussian blue and Mars black, which, when mixed, produces a very deep and rich color.
I absolutely love it.
Don’t be afraid of dark colors; light shades on such a background become even brighter and more contrasting 🙂

Hokusai’s ‘The Great Wave’ is among the most reproduced images in art history and the peak of Ukiyo-e: pictures of the floating world. Its level of emotion and gripping detail of a rogue wave threatening fishermen returning from Edo Bay have captured imaginations for centuries—from the Impressionists to our SCAD Bees! Join professor of art history Dr. Cindy Lisica and me on the latest episode of SCADclass as we delve into the depths of this revolutionary piece of art. 🔗 in bio.
