History in motion!
Tomorrow marks a monumental milestone for our region as Sound Transit launches the East Link light rail (2 Line) — the first train ever to run across the I-90 floating bridge on Lake Washington, seamlessly connecting Seattle to the Eastside, including Bellevue and Redmond.
Today, I had the honor of experiencing a special VIP preview ride alongside elected officials and leaders from Olympia, King County, and cities across the region. A truly proud and inspiring moment to witness innovation, collaboration, and vision come to life.
This is more than just a transit expansion — it’s a transformative step toward a more connected, sustainable future for our communities.
Looking forward to celebrating the official opening tomorrow and seeing everyone onboard this historic journey! 🚆💙

We take you on board Sound Transit’s Crosslake Connection, which opens Saturday.
Big news for Washington public transportation today. Congratulations to Sound Transit on a successful Crosslake Connection opening day and I’m excited to ride across Lake Washington sometime soon.
For the first time ever, light rail is crossing a floating bridge — connecting Seattle and the Eastside and transforming how our region moves.
Take a look at the Crosslake Connection's opening celebration and first rides across the lake 🎉
A special thank you to our Presenting Partner Microsoft as well as ALL of our event partners who showed up to support the opening event.

It’s not JUST a train… 🥹
What a historic weekend for Seattle! It was so beautiful to see how the city showed up to celebrate the opening of the new crosslake connection!
** Edit: Second longest floating bridge in the world. First is the 520 bridge just north of this! Seattle taking 1st and 2nd place on this one!

“A dream come true.” To celebrate the opening of the Crosslake Connection, we spoke to some of the people who made it possible.
It was no small thing to convince voters in three counties to raise their sales tax to expand light rail, all before a single train had started running. TCC and the leaders of the Mass Transit Now campaign got it done. And today, we get to celebrate!
Hear from former Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, campaign Field Director, Andrés Mantilla, and former TCC leaders, Rob Johnson and Genesee Adkins.

Sound Transit’s Crosslake connection officially opens on Saturday March 28. That means Seattle and Bellevue are finally connected. Mall lovers rejoice! Ahead of the opening, The Stranger hopped on the train from South Bellevue Station all the way across the floating bridge (a technological first!) to the new Judkins Park Station in Seattle’s Central District. It was scenic! Real city status here we come.

Ribbon Cut as Sound Transit Expansion Reaches Major Milestone
The ribbon has officially been cut, marking a major step forward for Sound Transit’s expansion connecting Seattle to the Eastside.
The new line crosses Lake Washington, linking communities like Judkins Park, Mercer Island, and Bellevue, and bringing years of planning and construction into operation.
Leaders, including Patty Murray, joined regional officials and community members to mark the moment, highlighting the long-term effort behind the project and its role in shaping how people move across the region.
The expansion reflects continued investment in public transit as the Puget Sound area works toward stronger regional connectivity and reduced reliance on car travel.

It was an honor to take part in the Crosslake preview ride from Mercer Island Station to Judkins Park Station that will officially both launch on March 28.
My sincere thanks to the entire Sound Transit team, leadership, and all of our state, regional and labor partners whose dedication and collaboration made this cross-lake connection possible. I was proud to be joined by Pierce County Executive Ryan Mello, Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers, and Sound Transit CEO Dow Constantine for the ride.
We’re looking forward to the official launch on March 28 and the expanded access and opportunity this connection will bring to our region.
Very excited to see the new Crosslake Connection open this Saturday. This link light rail will connect downtown Seattle to Bellevue and stop at Mercer Island. The newly opened two line extension will allow you to get from Bellevue to the international District in 23 minutes and is the first light rail to go across a floating bridge. #washingtonstate #seattle #crosslakeconnection #2line Aerial shots courtesy of Sound Transit
Freddy Monares got a sneak peek of Sound Transit’s new “Crosslake Connection,” the light rail line that crosses Lake Washington with a stop in Mercer Island. The new 2 Line opens this Saturday, March 28, just in time for the World Cup, which will host several games in Seattle this summer. According to Sound Transit (@soundtransit), when the I-90 portion opens this weekend, it will become the world’s first light rail operating on a floating bridge. 🚈
