For years, Queens residents and planners have debated what should happen to the abandoned Rockaway Beach Branch a 4.8-mile corridor running through central and southern Queens. Two competing visions have dominated the conversation: QueensLink and QueensWay. QueensLink proposes restoring train service along the corridor, potentially connecting neighborhoods from Rego Park to the Rockaways and carrying an estimated 75,000 riders per day, according to supporters. Advocates argue it could significantly improve transit access in underserved parts of Queens and reduce commute times, as well as add some green areas. On the other side, QueensWay envisions transforming the abandoned tracks into a High Line–style linear park, with bike paths, walking trails, and new public green space stretching roughly 3.5 miles through the borough. The project aims to connect communities, parks, and schools while creating new recreational space. Recently, the proposed budget from Zohran Mamdani allocated about $43 million for the QueensWay’s first phase, signaling strong momentum for the park project. But critics say building the park could make future rail restoration more difficult, or even require parts of the park to be removed if trains return.
