THE WHIP ⚡️
Lluis Bruguera always believed that developing racket speed is the best way to develop power and spin.
He emphasized that his son Sergi was able to win Roland Garros because of the powerful “whip” he developed early in his career — thanks to Lluis’ structured method of training. Drills specifically designed to develop what he called THE WHIP.
Bruguera method:
Why racket speed matters?
Power: Ball speed comes more from racket speed, not from how “hard” you swing with your body.
Spin: To hit heavy topspin, you need fast racket head speed + proper brushing.
Racket speed comes from relaxation + kinetic chain. Legs → hips → core → shoulder → arm → wrist. Whip, not push.
🚨 Most players try to hit harder by muscling with the shoulder/arm.
That = injuries + inconsistency.
💡Think: Quiet upper body, busy feet. Relaxed arm, fast racket like lightning.
Footwork
Why small adjustment steps matter: Perfect contact: 1-2 steps late or early = hitting late, framing, or losing power. Elite players take 3-4 tiny steps to dial it in.
Balance: You can’t hit a good shot off-balance. Small steps get your weight set before you swing.
Recovery: The best players are never still. They’re constantly making micro-adjustments to be ready for the next ball.
How they connect:
Racket speed without footwork = wild power.Footwork without racket speed = pushing the ball.
Elite tennis = Fast feet + Fast racket
The small steps get you to the ball balanced. The relaxed kinetic chain creates the racket speed.
