Early in my career, I thought every player wanted the same thing. A bigger club. A bigger contract. A bigger stage. Then Marvin Andrews taught me a lesson I’ve never forgotten. In 2008, Marvin was playing at Raith Rovers. Earlier in his career, I had taken him from Livingston to Rangers, where he had a fantastic run and became loved by the fans. Reading FC came in. Steve Coppell was looking for a proper centre back, and I recommended Marvin. The offer was serious. Around £10,000 a week on a two-year deal. At the time, Marvin was earning about £500 a week. On paper, it looked like the move of his career. But football is not played on paper. Marvin was happy where he was. He loved his home, his club, and he was training to become a pastor. That moment changed how I saw the job. A football agent is not there to force their own idea of success onto a player. Some players want to maximise every pound from a short career. That is completely fair. Others care more about family, faith, routine, peace, or being content with where they are. The job is to understand the person first. Football is a people business. ⚽ Reading FC CT vs Reading FC U15 Girls Great first game back for the boys since returning from the summer break! It was great to see the intensity really high from the start. I asked the players to focus on shorter passing, connecting with each other all over the pitch, and keeping the energy levels high with lots of movement and legwork. The boys did exactly that, and it was fantastic to see us score some very good goals while also keeping a clean sheet. Most importantly, everyone came through the game healthy. 🙌🏽 One of the biggest positives for me was seeing the growth from last year to this year within the team. As a coach, you never want to stand still we want to keep improving, keep developing and keep growing together. Seeing the progress the boys have made already is really pleasing, and we know there is still plenty more to come. 💪🏽⚽ With the league start being delayed we’ll continue to play friendlies as we prepare for the upcoming league season. A big thank you to @readingwomenfc for the game. They never gave up, showed great character, and there are some really talented girls in that team.
