Minnesota lawmakers are moving with speed to repeal César Chávez Day following a New York Times investigation into allegations of sexual abuse by César Chávez, marking a pivotal moment in how the state and the broader labor movement reckons with legacy and harm. Led by State Rep. María Isa Pérez-Vega, the effort reflects a growing call to center survivors, including Dolores Huerta, while affirming that honoring farmworker activism does not require elevating a single figure. César Chavez Day in California is now Farm Workers Day. On Thursday, the California Senate voted to rename the holiday following sexual abuse allegations against the labor icon. Gov. Newsom signed the bill making the change within the last hour. Credit: CALIFORNIA STATE SENATE
Today the Arizona Senate voted to repeal the state holiday honoring Cesar Chavez. Growing up, my family always shared with me the power of the farm worker movement. To bring dignity to the work that so many refuse to do. We even refrained from eating grapes, just as a reminder of the historic Delano grape boycott, and to not take the food on our tables for granted. I can say with confidence Cesar Chavez was someone I always looked up to, which makes this even more disappointing and heartbreaking. While Chavez died a year before I was born, my uncle Manuel Luis Ortega met him as a student leader at ASU where he, too, was inspired by his work and would go on to arbitrate disputes for the United Farm Workers. After my uncle’s tragic and sudden passing in 1998, the younger brother of Cesar, Richard Chavez who was a carpenter... even built my uncle’s pine casket. 5 years later in 2003, the Chavez Foundation named an affordable housing center after my Tio in El Mirage which remains open today. I share all this to emphasize just how heartbreaking it has been to read this news. I support this measure to repeal this day celebrated by our state because as one of two men in the Arizona Senate Democratic caucus, I believe we as men must do better and we must hold the behavior of sexual predators and all those who abuse young women and minors accountable. We have a responsibility to continue to honor the movement and fight against the exploitation of workers, and that includes survivors of sexual abuse.

HYPOCRISY EXPOSED: CA Democrats just got a taste of their own medicine as they spent years protecting Cesar Chavez for political benefit. But it is worse as I outline how they have also failed Latino communities, crushed farm workers with bad policies, and ignored victims who deserve real action. WATCH:

Recent news regarding the actions of Cesar Chavez are heartbreaking. Many of us are feeling shaken, confused, and grieving something we never expected to confront. First, to the survivors: I see you, I hear you, and I believe you. No legacy, no title, and no movement should ever come at the cost of someone’s safety or dignity. This moment is painful because it touches our families, our histories, and the stories we were raised on. Last week, our community came together—not as officials, but as people—to sit with that pain and ask what our community needs now. What we heard was clear: honesty, accountability, and leadership that does not look away. That’s why we made the difficult decision to remove the César Chávez signs and bust from the park on Tennyson. It was not easy—but it was necessary to honor those who have been harmed. And still, removal is only the beginning. Because the labor movement and the farmworker movement are bigger than any one person. They belong to the workers, the families, and the generations who sacrificed for dignity and justice. As the granddaughter of a farmworker and union leader, and the daughter of a tamalero, and the daughter of a social justice worker, this moment is deeply personal. I carry the stories of struggle and resilience with me every day. The mission of this movement—to protect, uplift, and affirm our people—remains unchanged. Now is not a time for silence or division. It is a time for courage, compassion, and truth. We can use this moment to strengthen our commitment to a community where dignity, safety, and respect are non‑negotiable. We carry the responsibility forward for the next seven generations and beyond. ¡Sí Se Puede!
