Here’s what I see happen way to much A court orders reunification therapy. Everyone nods. Everyone agrees. And then… nothing happens. Months go by. The parent is told: ‘The child isn’t ready.’ ‘The therapist wants to wait.’ ‘We’ll revisit this later.’ And no one can explain: • who controls the timeline • who decides when conjoint sessions begin • what happens if the child resists • or what the next step is when the process stalls So reunification doesn’t fail because parents don’t care. It fails because the order has no structure. In mediation, this is where people get stuck emotionally, they argue about intentions, blame, or who’s blocking who. But that’s not how you negotiate reunification. You don’t negotiate feelings. You negotiate process. That means: • defining who has authority • setting timelines and review points • agreeing on step-up options if direct contact isn’t possible yet • and deciding what happens if therapy doesn’t progress Because when the process is vague, one professional becomes a gatekeeper, one parent is left powerless, and the child sits in the middle of adult confusion. Structure is what protects everyone, especially the child. If you’re going into mediation and reunification therapy is on the table, you need more than good intentions and hope. You need a plan that actually functions in real life. I offer mediation prep sessions… 30 minutes for $35 We can map out reunification terms that are realistic, enforceable, and centered on the child without erasing a parent. I had the privilege of attending the Celebration of Piqui’s Law: Honoring Victims and Advocates—a deeply meaningful event remembering the life of Piqui, advocates for children, and the passage of the legislation, Piqui’s Law, that I authored to protect children and families in our family court system. Receiving the Piqui’s Champion Award was a profound honor and a reminder that our work is far from over to ensure a brighter and safer future for our children. Ana Estevez, Piqui’s mother, continues to inspire me with her courage and advocacy. Proud to be part of a coalition that has been instrumental in bringing about change. Thank you Sandy Ross of the CA Protective Parents Association for your dedication to this critical issue and parents and children, whose relentless advocacy allowed for the banning of dangerous reunification programs.
