Craig, the gentle giant of Amboseli, was more than an elephant! He was an ambassador for all elephants and one of the most photographed in the world. Born in 1972, he became one of Africa’s last super tuskers, known for his enormous tusks, calm presence, and majestic grace. Loved by the Maasai community and admired by visitors worldwide, Craig defined harmony between humans and wildlife. We were saddened to hear that Craig the SuperTusker had passed away early this morning (3 Jan 2026). Beloved by many people but particularly by the local community with whom he shared his range, Craig was born in January 1972 and had just turned 54 years old. He led a long life and no doubt fathered many calves. Thanks to his many protectors he died peacefully of natural causes. Craig represented all that is wondrous about the Amboseli elephants. We have been privileged to have spent time with Craig last year, his passing marks the loss of a piece of Africa's natural heritage, but his memory lives on to inspire continued efforts in wildlife preservation.

He was a super tusker — one of the last of a rare class of bull elephants whose tusks weighed over 45 kg each, sweeping the ground with every step like ancient royalty of the savanna. 🐘👑 His majestic presence beneath the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro captured the hearts of tourists, conservationists, and wildlife lovers around the world.  For over five decades, Craig roamed free — a serene, calm giant with a dignified spirit. He was one of the few elephants to live out his entire life protected in the wild, thanks to decades of dedicated anti-poaching efforts and conservation work by the Kenya Wildlife Service, the Amboseli Trust for Elephants, local communities, and wildlife organizations.  Craig wasn’t just a symbol of strength — he was an ambassador for elephant conservation. In 2021, he was adopted by East African Breweries under the popular Tusker brand, representing the deep bond between Kenya’s wildlife heritage and its people.  Even in his final years, visitors said he stood still and calm as cameras clicked, awe reflecting in human eyes as much as in his own wise gaze.
