We love playing at the river BUT, it’s hard for me to fully relax sometimes when I know my kiddos are still learning to swim and I feel like I have to be watching them like a hawk.
Obviously, I’m still watching😂 BUT, them being in life jackets and the Lazy River section having been diverted from the main channel, keeping the flow calm…allows me to be able to just chill tf out for a bit, while they can just go nuts and have fun. It’s a win-win for everyone.
.
Just, be sure to turn the jackets back in to the hut AND clean up after yourselves! Let’s keep our play spots clean, safe, and available for years to come.

📍Shady Lane Arboretum, Evington, Leicester
Guys firstly, I have just made my first reel 🎉 #awkwardlyproud. Quickly moving back to Shady Lane and the reason for this post. I love this place, we all love this place. It is a fab woodland river to explore just on the edge of Leicester, often really quiet with only a handful of dog walkers. I don’t think we have ever been and found another family playing in the river.
There are a handful of paths to explore, but the fun is when you go down to the river. We always take our wellies (often with waterproofs too) as the boys are always in the river, throwing in stones, sticks, unblocking dams, making dams, walking up the stream, you name it, they're doing it if it means they will probably be getting wet.
We often do a circular walk around, with several stops next to the river, exploring some tunnels in trees, finding stepping stones, and wooden walkways. Lots of variation to keep little ones interested. We have also recently find a fabulous family friendly coffee shop to include with this outing.
🅿️ Free car park
📍What3words: over.ash.awards
🕕Normally spend 2-3 hours
📏Probably about a 1-1.5mile circular walk but you can make this shorter for little legs easily.
💵Free
👶Can take a buggy as most paths are dirt tracks, but if you are wanting to be near the river, a carrier is advisable.
☕Eden Cafe Bar can easily be included in walk (separate review)
🤸♀️Not a playground but can link in with Evington Park playground if you want, but my boys get so much just playing in the river and finding sticks.
