What do you think this is? It is NOT sand! 🏖️❌ It’s a batch of homemade eggshell fertilizer. Most people just toss crushed shells into the dirt, but they can take years to decompose. To speed things up, I: • Bake them to get rid of any bacteria. • Grind them into a fine powder (as seen in the video!). • Soak them in vinegar to extract the calcium. Once the fizzing (the chemical reaction) stops, you’re left with a calcium-rich liquid and grit that plants can use right away. Perfect for preventing blossom end rot! Plain eggshells (CaCO3) aren’t water-soluble, so the vinegar is the “magic” step that actually feeds the plants (creating calcium acetate)! Do you use eggshells in your garden? #adventure #urbangarden #garden #zerowaste #sustainability

WINTER = ROOT VEGGIE SEASON While everything above the soil slows down… magic is happening underneath. Carrots, beetroot, radish, turnips — this is their time to shine. Cooler weather = sweeter, stronger roots and fewer pests. The secret? Loose soil. Deep watering. Patience. Don’t rush them. Don’t overthink them. Just plant… and let winter do its thing. I’ve had a few people ask about how I manage pests, so here it is 👇 If you wouldn’t drink it, don’t spray it … that’s my one rule for the kitchen garden. I mix two parts water to one part apple cider vinegar and spray every two weeks. Simple. Cheap. And nothing I’d feel weird about eating straight off the plant. 🌱 When you’re growing your own food specifically to know exactly what goes into it, spraying mystery chemicals kind of defeats the purpose … don’t you think? Save this one for your next garden spray day 📌 #kitchengarden #growyourown #australiangarden #selfsufficiency #foodsecurity
Planted red-veined sorrel next to my rhubarb today 🌱 They share the same love for rich soil and sun to partial shade — a simple, beautiful pairing that’s both practical and edible. Lemony sorrel now, tart rhubarb later ❤️ #ediblegarden #allotment #ogródek #redveinedsorrel #allotmentgarden
I love an accidental crop. My garden is full of them 😂 #allotments #growingfood #inthegarden
Who knew your breakfast could help grow your garden? Don’t toss those eggshells, turn them into the cutest little seed starters instead! Simply rinse them out, gently crack the tops, fill with compost, and pop in your seeds. Once your seedlings are ready, you can plant the whole thing straight into the soil (shell and all!) I just give the shell a gentle crush as you plant to help the roots break through. It’ll naturally decompose and even give your plants a little calcium boost. It’s a tiny, simple swap that reduces waste and brings new life into your garden I love a full-circle moment!♻️ Have you tried this before? Or are you giving it a go this season? #GrowYourOwn #SustainableLiving #SeedStarting #GardenTips #EcoFriendlyLiving WasteLess KitchenGarden SimpleSwaps
Let’s normalize mud-staches!!😎 How to get one? Put your hands in the soil, forget time and space whilst having fun, go back inside, and you will see it!! • • • #kitchengardening #selfsufficiency #growfoodnotlawns #horticulture #gardenhacks
It’s time to harvest my first veggies from my @cedarplanters raised cedar planter 🌱 Harvesting my first Mooli / Daikon Radishes were especially exciting and I look forward to growing them again, the depth of the planter is perfect for those gorgeous root veggies! This additional growing space has been brilliant this winter season and I can’t wait to sow my salad seeds next to have a designated salad patch in the garden 🪴 #raisedplanter #cedarplanter #growyourown #ukgardening #growyourownfood
Building soil is one of the most important things we do as gardeners. I’m filling my new raised beds by layering wood, manure, bedding, clay soil, cardboard, bokashi and biochar to create a living soil that will keep improving over time. I try to use as much as possible from what I already have around me. It feels more sustainable, but it also builds better soil in the long run. Right at the top, I finish with BioBloom from @biobloom.soil.enricher which means I can plant and sow straight away while everything underneath slowly breaks down and feeds the soil over time. The little creatures and worms will mix it all for me over time 🥰 I love this way of gardening – using as much as I have already but also using sustainable products that means I can get growing straight away. #kitchengarden #growyourownfood #soilbuilding #realgardening #sustainablegarden
This year I will be reusing everything in my garden! From old vegetable scraps as compost to creating roots with stems. I will salvage everything!🥬🫜🪴🫑 #fyp #gardening #springgarden #learnandgrow #garden
From compost heap to herb garden, with help from the hens. Now the view across the garden from the Woodland garden and the ditch is a little prettier and the entrance to the plant nursery takes you past fragrance herbs rather than …. The ground is very soft, so need to stomp on it a little more and get some gravel down to link it in with the other paths. Margery Fish enjoyed her herb garden and it should be closer to the house but this small square of land lent it self to something formal and geometric and I divided the square with circles! They are the bands from a water but, the wood long since rotted away.
