In Youngstown, Ohio, a rusted piece of metal serves as a symbol of the Rust Belt’s decline and the question of whether its cities can reinvent themselves. @malkoffnews has more tonight in CBS Evening News at 6:30 p.m. ET.
🔗Link to the full video in bio. Just south of Pittsburgh, PA is a region known as the Mon Valley in the heart of America’s Rust Belt. It was once the epicenter of industry that built the country, a place where people from around the world came to find their opportunities. Steel and coal haven’t entirely gone away, but the once-prospering towns of the Mon Valley have changed dramatically. Join the locals and me to better understand what happened to this once-vital region of America.
Want to hire the Amish? Here’s how you’re going to find them near you! The Amish are not nationwide at this time. They do keep expanding outward from Pennsylvania, though! You are most likely to find them in Appalachia, the Rust Belt, and New England. Remember that you can always have them build you something over here and hire a shipper to bring it to you. Their pricing is very fair, bordering on cheaper than other builders. It’s worth it to ship what they make! I have worked with dozens of Amish communities and families at this point and every single member of their community is an incredibly hard working, honest, kind, and spiritual person. It shows in their work. (This video is from this last spring if you’re wondering why my hair suddenly long. If you’re not wondering, that’s ok, too) I write about all of this on my substack!

Reports of the Rust Belt’s decline are overblown. In @cityjournal_mi, Jordan McGillis travels across Ohio—from struggling Middletown to booming Columbus—arguing that America’s manufacturing future depends on strengthening regional hubs, not saving every declining town. Ah yes, the classic “it’s actually not the simple fix, it needs scrapped” conversation. Coming from the rust belt, it’s one I’m very familiar with. Except back there it’s usually the whole car we’re talking about 😂
There's a good chance that the election will come down to a percentage point in the state of Pennsylvania. I talked to @congressmanboyle of Philadelphia about whether Kamala Harris can win the Rust Belt. For our full conversation, go to the LINK in my bio
Today I am thankful to have not started my technician career in the rust belt… 🙏🏻
For this #Superfund101, let’s take a look at a common source of contaminants in the Rust Belt: slag. As EPA Community Involvement Coordinator Phil Gurley describes, slag is a byproduct of steel manufacturing. During the process, iron is heated up to temperatures that allow impurities—including lead, cadmium, and other metals—to separate. In an era before protections for the environment were as strong as they are now, slag was often dumped near steel plants, like we see at the Schroud Property Superfund site in Chicago. This summer, the Schroud site team will be sampling to ensure that contaminants from the slag have not migrated offsite into residential yards and the nearby Indian Creek. Learn more about the site at our link in bio! 🔗
