POV: Trying to make friends at RV parks as a Black family full time RVing. Given we always the super minority, we have to be very careful out here. Like very very careful at all times. For the most part we’ve felt safe and okay in most parts of the U.S. however there are also those few times when we’ve felt very uncomfortable, unwelcome and more. I usually let my 9yr old ride his bike around the RV park but in some places, I just wouldn’t feel comfortable letting him out of my sight. In Galveston especially, I got eerie vibes and remember thinking, if I let my son go biking around by himself, it could turn into an Emmet Till kinda situation. Yes, it actually crossed my mind, in 2022. Heartbreaking and scary. (Ps, if you don’t know who Emmet Till is or what happened to him, stop whatever you’re doing right now, head to google and take a few minutes to educate yourself on this, thanks). But yea, let’s get the small talk out the way, I need to know what type of person you are. Let’s not waste each others time. If these minor things are an issue, then who knows what runs deeper. To clear a few things - Ps 1 - My Family’s Safety matters. Ps 2 - Question 1 is less about political parties but more of personal values. Ps 3 - My family’s safety matters. So if you’re mad that the mermaid is Black that says a lot about the type of person that you are. Ps 4 - If you’ve never had to worry about the safety of your child or your family because of the color of their skin, go argue with someone else not me. I appreciate that our 10-year-old understands the humor in this 😂 What my husband isn’t aware of up until this point: Now that the major work is done, my mind has been combing through all of the finer details that will bring the space together… I know he thinks he’s hit the finish line, but the tedious “asks“ are in their infancy. I don’t know if it was just us, but July felt like the L O N G E S T month! We decided to slow ourselves down quite a bit since June was such a big month of driving. We spent a few weeks falling in love with Seward, Alaska. We took a Kenai Fjords National Park boat tour, engulfed ourselves in the local 4th of July events Seward is famous for, caught our first bunch of salmon on the beach, hiked, met new friends, and took in the endless views. And then, it rained. And rained, and rained some more. Alaska has had a dry summer, until about mid July, where we had days on end of rain. As much as we wished for beautiful sunny weather, the rain helped with wildfires around the state. After about 10 days of rain, and feeling a bit too cooped up in the Airstream, we checked the forecast and found sunshine about 3 hours away in Homer, Alaska. Homer, just like many of these small Alaskan coastal towns, sucked us in and nestled its way into our hearts. Every sticker on our map and every photo at the state sign makes me so happy. I love going back to videos especially when we just started and looking at how much A has grown over time. Just an RV and a dream ✨ Several years ago, we both felt a strange tug that things could be *different*. If you’ve followed me for awhile, you know we’ve owned land and lost land and tried several times to make our dream happen, but for whatever reason, God always said “not yet.” The more we’ve come to love the chaos with our kids while they’re little, the more we’ve begun to realize they are quickly falling into the trap of thinking “more is best” instead of “what I have is enough.” In December, we sold our beautiful 2500 square foot house and bought some land and a big ol’ rig. We’re going to stay put and enjoy the outdoor, simple lifestyle of LESS. (It was sooo freeing to sell everything we own! Scary…but amazing!) Eventually we’ll build something. For now, we’ll be doing some really amazing things to the inside and the land. We’ll travel more, homeschool more, create more memories. The right kind of “more” instead of stuff on top of stuff.
