As a social worker my career has been dedicated to safeguarding children. And whilst the definition of safeguarding means different things to different people, there is literally no point in me doing my job if I’m not talking about the safeguarding risk that is reform uk. The racism should be enough for anyone not to vote, but in addition to that it’s the stripping back of equality law and women’s rights, placing children into poverty, amongst all the other oppressive ideologies they represent that won’t just impact us now, it has the potential to impact future generations. One of my many thoughts I come back to is working as a social worker supporting a child who became pregnant as a result of ongoing abuse. Her ability to access the choice to an abortion was lifesaving, and we know the reform playbook and what it means for birth rights. Social workers in local authorities are restricted on what they can say, but the legitimization of a party rooted in fascist ideologies has led to a system where many social workers are forced into silence against a political party that are entirely misaligned with the international definition of social work, our commitment to social justice and human rights. There’s no point in me working with risk and harm every day and saying nothing about the safeguarding risk to children that feels imminent the more that this party is normalized as an option. These are real matters arising, and Muslim parents have been very vocal about them. Schools often come from a safeguarding angle, with the argument that young children do not have the capacity to fast. What they do not realise is that our faith is not just a religion, but a way of life. Our children have been taught from a young age what their duties and obligations are. They have resilience and fortitude ingrained in them. They learn from their parents, and they are eager to practise their deen. Many children start fasting voluntarily as young as 5 or 6. They are not forced, they choose to, because Alhamdulillah, they stand firm upon the fitrah. So, if you are faced with this challenge in your child’s school, you have the power to effect change. Advocate calmly but firmly for your child. Let the school know the religious obligations upon your child once they have attained puberty. Move from fear to informed advocacy. Luckily, religion is one of the protected characteristics, and you and your children cannot be victimised or vilified for it law. This will be one of many challenges our Muslim children will face as they navigate life. Remember that a time will come when holding on to your religion will be like holding on to burning coal. As best as we can, let’s keep speaking up for them and helping them build their confidence. May Allah make it easy. Amin. How would you address this?
