“Cass McCombs is, in my opinion, the greatest singer/songwriter in the world,” said Adam Friedland, introducing the artist in NYC tonight. (McCombs played the first ‘Unplugged’ for the comedian’s podcast last fall.) The veteran musician made a compelling case for the superlative at LPR, delivering a revelatory two-hour set of psych-folk and indie rock to kick off his 2026 North American tour. McCombs was backed by a propulsive, locked-in crew: guitarist Mike Bones, bassist Brian Betancourt, and drummer Austin Vaughn. He switched to keys for the recent “I Never Dream About Trains” and 2002’s “Your Mother And Father.” The show, featuring most of last year’s ‘Interior Live Oak,’ was preceded by an intricate solo showcase from longtime friend and collaborator Chris Cohen. Cohen played guitar on McCombs’ 2003 debut ‘A’ and co-produced ‘Interior Live Oak.’ More recently, the two Bay Area singer-songwriters teamed up on a pair of new tracks — now streaming and available for pre-order on 7” via Domino/Hardly Art. (Cohen played the B-side, “Ignis Fatuus, Hinkypunk, Sharkfins And Ambergris,” tonight.) Here’s “Sacred Heart,” from 2005’s ‘PREfection.’ [📝/📹: @scottgum] #CassMcCombs #ChrisCohen
