Piper - 2016
Watch Pixar’s breathtaking short film Piper, the story of a tiny sandpiper chick who must learn how to find food on her own — and face her fear of the ocean waves. With stunning animation and a heartfelt message, Piper beautifully captures the courage it takes to step out of your comfort zone.
This Oscar-winning short reminds us that even the smallest steps can lead to the biggest growth. 🐦

This is probably the cutest thing Pixar's ever made.
That baby bird with those huge eyes - you just want to protect it. 😂
And if you've ever been to the beach and watched sandpipers, they absolutely nailed it.
Those birds are always running back and forth from the waves trying to grab food before the water comes back.
Pixar captured exactly how they move. It's a birder's dream.
The best part is when the baby's underwater buried in the sand and this tiny hermit crab reaches up and taps it on the nose like "hey, wake up."
The baby opens its eyes and there's all these clams just sitting there.
Baby goes insane pulling them up and all the other birds are standing there confused. 😂
Pixar took 3 yearsto make this 6-minute short.
Director Alan Barillaro and the team rendered every single grain of sand individually.
They studied real beaches, shot slow-motion wave footage to get the water physics perfect.
Zero dialogue - just pure visual storytelling.
Won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2017.
Here's what gets me though: the baby learned from this tiny crab - not from the other birds, not from its mom.
This little crab that's a fraction of its size showed it something nobody else could see.
The thing the baby was most afraid of was exactly where the answer was hiding.
The baby stopped running FROM the waves and started moving THROUGH them.
Same ocean, same waves, completely different result.

Most sandpipers nest only in the Far North—but did you know that the Spotted Sandpiper can be found throughout much of North America during the summer? 🌎 You might encounter one walking while bobbing the rear half of its body up and down in an odd teetering motion, just like this one.
Spring migration may be over, but with the Bird Migration Explorer from Audubon and partners, you can keep track of all your favorite migratory birds’ journeys and discover where they’re heading to next.

I could watch these birds all day! Sandpipers —tiny yet tireless. They spend their days running along the shore, always searching, always moving. A sweet reminder that even the smallest creatures work diligently at what they’re called to do. 🌊💛

Have you ever heard of the Spoon-billed Sandpiper? Well it might not be around for much longer #rarebird #conservation #extinction #birding #sandpiper
This is the first time I made this beautiful bird. At some point I doubted whether I would be able to make a beak, but I liked the result.
It was a good and interesting order 😊.
The Spoon-billed Sandpiper is made of wool, the beak is made of clay, the legs are made of wire and thread, and the eyes are glass.
There are many different types of birds in my profile. Welcome!

Blink and you’ll miss them… tiny legs moving like they’re late for something important 🏖️🐦
Those little beach runners? Sandpiper energy is unmatched. One second they’re sprinting toward the waves… next second they’re running for their lives like the ocean just offended them.
No chill. No clear plan. Just pure instinct and tiny feet doing overtime.
And somehow… they never trip, never crash, just perfectly timed chaos on repeat.
It looks random… but it’s actually survival in motion.
Follow for more moments that are small but weirdly fascinating 🌊🔥

Sandpipers are *usually* tiny shorebirds — but not this one.
At 2.4 metres tall and weighing around 135 kilograms, or 300 pounds, the big statue of a tiny shorebird dwarfs Robin Hanson, the 75-year-old man who made it.
The sculpture is constructed of steel, fibreglass and epoxy.
It took Hanson two months to create what he believes to be the world’s largest semipalmated sandpiper.

Greater Yellowlegs (Tringa melanoleuca) in the middle of Las Vegas?
Every year, we have a number of Greater Yellowlegs that spend the winter in concrete drainage channels in the city of Las Vegas. These channels contain runoff water from rain events, irrigation, and treated wastewater. 99% of the water that goes down the drain gets treated and released into these channels and eventually makes its way back to Lake Mead.
The treated water is rich in organic material, and the shallow water in these concrete channels acts a a good surface for algae to grow, which attracts insects and other invertebrates that the Yellowlegs feed on.
The birds get accustomed to the people and city noise, and I am able to get close to the birds without affecting their behavior. The gray concrete makes a diffuse background and I am able to capture images that look like they were taken in a remote natural setting :)
Bonus Points for viewers who can spot the Lesser Yellowlegs in the video, which is a rare bird this time of year!

Though nesting season for shorebirds is nearing an end—many beachgoers will still be encountering them as fall migration begins. 🏖
That’s why it’s still so important to look out for our beloved coastal birds while at the beach and remember to #ShareTheShore by picking up trash, keeping pets leashed, and giving shorebirds at least 100 feet of space.
