Comment the word ‘NECK’ if you want me to DM you my 5 favorite neck pain exercises! Do you experience neck pain that persists on one or both sides with or without arm symptoms? These symptoms may include pain, aching, numbness, coldness, tingling, or even weakness. Well this may all be due to the Scalene muscles… you see they attach from the side of the neck to the first rib, and the blood vessels and nerves that control the arm pass through these scalene muscles. If they are in spasm, not only do they tug on the neck, but they can press on those nerves and blood vessels going down the arm… causing all those symptoms! In this video, I show a release for 2 of the 3 scalenes, the anterior and middle which can cause all this. Give it a try and if you get relief, we know these muscles were playing a role. If it does not work, then we must look at other structures along the chain that may cause these symptoms! #scalene #neckpain #neckpainrelief #neckpaintreatment #pinchednerve #thoracicoutletsyndrome #tos

bradley_blair_osteopath The scalene muscles are the three muscles found on each side of the neck, spanning between the transverse processes of the cervical vertebrae and the upper two ribs. Namely, these muscles are the scalenus anterior (anterior scalene), scalenus medius (middle scalene) and scalenus posterior (posterior scalene). They all belong to the lateral vertebral muscle group. The main functions of these muscles are flexion, lateral flexion and rotation of the neck. Moreover, they are the accessory muscles of respiration, elevating the ribs during forced inspiration. Anterior scalene muscle Origin: anterior tubercle of transverse processes of vertebrae C3-C6 Insertion: scalene tubercle of rib 1, superior border of rib 1 (anterior to subclavian groove) Innervation: anterior rami of spinal nerves C4-C6 Blood supply: ascending cervical branch of the inferior thyroid artery. Function: ➡️bilateral contraction - neck flexion ➡️ unilateral contraction - neck lateral flexion (ipsilateral), neck rotation (contralateral), elevates rib 1 Middle scalene muscle Origin: transverse processes of C1/C2 -> C7 (specifically posterior tubercles of transverse processes of vertebrae in C3-C7) Insertion: superior border of rib 1 (posterior to subclavian groove) Innervation: anterior rami of spinal nerves C3-C8 Blood supply: ascending cervical branch of the inferior thyroid artery Function: neck lateral flexion, elevates rib 1 Posterior scalene muscle Origin: posterior tubercles of transverse processes of vertebrae C4-C6/C5-C7 Insertion: external surface of rib 2 Innervation: anterior rami of spinal nerves C6-C8 Blood supply: ascending cervical branch of the inferior thyroid artery; superficial cervical artery Function: neck lateral flexion, Elevates rib 2 The scalenus anterior muscle is found in the lateral part of the neck, anterior to the subclavian artery and posterior to the phrenic nerve. It is related to many structures of the neck; Posteriorly, it is related to the suprapleural membrane, pleura, roots of the brachial plexus and the subclavian artery. Places in our human bodies that have massive amounts of nerves criss-crossing creates more friction with movement. More friction means more opportunity for restricted blood flow. Less blood = more free radicals = more fibroblast (little cellular repairmen) proliferation = more adhesion. Arguably, the most common spot to get adhesion for chronic neck pain sufferers is the nerve roots at scalenes. This spot is where the nerves from the neck leave the spine and connect with the nerves going down to the shoulder, arm, forearm and fingers. People with tingly hands or fingers typically need this spot treated too. The bad news about having adhesion here is that no amount of: ❌ adjustments ❌ rehab ❌ strengthening ❌ acupuncture ❌ pain meds … will help it. The good news about having adhesion here is when you’re done with @adhesionreleasemethods, you’ll notice a sustained improvement in your neck or shoulder flexibility and pain. ➡️➡️ SHARE this with someone who has chronic neck pain and doesn’t know what to do about it. #neckpainrelief #neckpaintreatment #scalene
