New Year, New Us! 🌊 Sustainable Surf is formally becoming Seatrees! 🌱 When we launched Sustainable Surf almost 15 years ago, we didn’t know yet which one of our innovative programs would become most effective in helping us achieve our mission: to regenerate the health of our Ocean for the benefit of both people and the planet – but we knew that Seatrees was something extra special from the start… What started as a small initiative has become the cornerstone of our nonprofit’s mission to restore coastal marine ecosystems worldwide to solve the intertwined crises of biodiversity loss and climate change. 🌱🌎 Now, we’re taking the next step in our journey. Sustainable Surf is formally changing its name to Seatrees! This shift allows us to focus entirely on creating a positive legacy for people and the planet, with an ambitious goal to scale to 100 global restoration projects by 2030. This isn’t just a name change. It’s a game changer for us as an organization, a reflection of how far we’ve come and where we’re headed, and we hope our example inspires others to join us on this exciting journey. With 25+ Seatrees projects restoring kelp and mangrove forests, seagrass meadows, coral reefs, coastal watersheds and more, we’re doubling down on solutions that regenerate the ocean, protect biodiversity, and reverse climate change. This name change reflects our evolution and our commitment to scaling impact for people and the planet. 🌱 👉 Want to dive deeper? Climate × Sports | Miguel Blanco ‘Optimism is my way of dealing with it – if you focus only on the issues, you become overwhelmed, paralysed, you end up getting nothing done. Instead, I try to focus on solutions.’ At just 29, pro surfer and ocean advocate Miguel Blanco has spent his life chasing waves and witnessing first-hand how the ocean – and coastal communities – are changing. From the beaches and cliffs of Portugal to coastlines across the globe, Miguel has seen both the beauty and the challenges our oceans face: climate change, pollution, overfishing, and mass tourism. But living at Ribeira d’Ilhas in Ericeira, he has also seen solutions: communities advocating for coastlines, ensuring cleaner waters, and the power of people coming together to protect what they love. In the second feature of our new series Climate × Sports, Miguel opens up about his journey as a professional surfer, environmentalist, and ocean advocate. His message is clear: we all share a responsibility to protect the blue lungs of our planet. — Read the full interview The Ocean Has Changed Dramatically via the link in bio 🔗 Series produced by Icarus Complex, with interviews conducted by Lukas Brunner – the mind behind the project. . . . . . #climatechange #surfing #climateandsport #sportsforclimateaction #oceanhealth #conservation #sports #SeaTrees

As always we’re excited with the @sea.trees X @indosole partnership to restore coral reefs in Nusa Penida with their local project partners @ocean_gardener 🪸 So far, @sea.trees has helped to plant 16,000 corals in Nusa Penida, which helps to rebuild and protect these essential ecosystems. Coral reefs are home to a wide variety of marine life, and they provide food and shelter for millions of people around the world🐠 However, they’re under threat from climate change, pollution, and overfishing. Through this partnership, we’re helping to make a difference for the local community and for our planet. Indosoles are made from recycled materials, so they’re good for the environment too♻️ Shop Indosoles today and help restore coral reefs! . . . . . . #indosole #seatrees #coralreefrestoration #nusapenida #savetheocean #sustainablefashion #consciousconsumption
Our latest surveys from Tanker’s Reef in September 2024 reveal that the kelp forest at our restoration site is holding strong — even after coordinated urchin culling efforts ended over a year ago. Here’s what we found: 📉 Urchin densities remain low: ~3 urchins/m² at the restoration site vs. 5/m² at the control site 🌱 Giant kelp densities have stayed stable since fall 2023 📓 While stipe (stem) densities dropped by 45% in June 2024, they’ve since stabilized This likely points to larger kelp plants being lost over winter, and replaced by new growth in 2024. The kelp forest is showing resilience — a promising sign for long-term recovery. Big thanks to @sea.trees for funding these ongoing monitoring efforts. We’ll be back in the field for more surveys in June 2025. Want to get involved? Check out our Reef Check training schedule. @g2krproject #KelpForest #MarineRestoration #SeaTrees #MarineBiology #CitizenScience #ScubaDiving #HelpTheKelp #GiantKelp #MarineScience #ReefMonitoring #OceanConservation
Holy stipe look at the size of that one!! Did you know that giant kelp can grow up to 175ft tall? We found this one floating near our kelp farms in Alaska; the surrounding kelp forests were thriiiving 🌿✨ PS - We do not harvest wild kelp to make our kelp chips! We source our kelp from nearby kelp farms; at the farms, all kelp is additive to the ecosystem. We don’t wild-harvest because we don’t want to take away pre-existing habitats 💙 #giantkelp #helpthekelp #kelpforests #kelpforest #kelp #algae #algaelove #marineconservation #oceanconservation #sendkelp #seatrees #alaskawildlife #oceanecosystem #seaweeds #marinebiologist #marinescience #marineecology #seaweedfarming #kelpfarming #regenerativemovement #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefarming

Happy #worldoceansday today and everyday!!!! 🌊🦀🐳🐙🦈🪸🪼🐚🤿 Here are some things we can do to help keep our oceans clean and beautiful!! 1. Reduce single (and multi-use!!!) use plastic 2. Participate in beach, lake, and river cleanups 3. Use reef safe sunscreen and eco friendly cleaning products 4. Speak up!! Your voice is your most powerful weapon! 5. Ethical eco tourism, consuming consciously and supporting ocean friendly brands such as: - @4ocean removes one pound of trash for every product sold, and they’ve removed over 30 million pounds of trash since they were established in 2017 - @seaavision creates sustainable activewear from recycled ocean plastic and partners with organizations like @oceanworks - @bureo makes products like skateboard decks and sunglasses from recycled fishing nets, one of the most harmful types of ocean plastic - @parley.tv collaborates with big name brands to covert production to marine plastic waste in both fashion and packaging - @sea.trees by @sustainsurf funds regenerative ocean restoration projects like planting mangrove forests and coral reef farms When Gill said “all drains lead to the ocean” he meant it. It’s up to us to take care of our Earth and her Oceans for our children’s children’s children’s children to enjoy 🙌🏽 These clips are from my scuba diving group trip to the Philippines with @yourfriendsareboringwearenot back in April!! I’m thinking I should plan another diving trip… where have you always dreamed of diving?? Even if hidden beneath the surface, why is it important for us to care about life in the oceans Before it Disappears? Did you know that Ocean Ecosystems are 5-10x more effective at sequestering carbon than land ecosystems? We have that very same ocean ecosystem to thank for every other breath we take! —— —— Before it Disappears is a beautiful artistic representation of a kelp forest- Learn more about how you can support SeaTrees projects like Kelp Forests, Coral Gardens and more in my article on Means & Matters - link in bio! —— —— @BankOfTheWest @SeaTrees @SustainableSurf #SeaTrees #KelpForest #OceanRestoration #OceanEcosystem
