Winter Garden Design Series Part 5: Seed Heads When the flowers fade it’s tempting to cut everything back. But seed heads are winter gold. They add structure, texture and height when borders might otherwise feel flat. They catch frost, glow in low sunlight and create beautiful silhouettes against a pale sky. And they’re not just decorative. Seeds feed garden birds through the winter months and stems and plants provide shelter for overwintering insects. Leaving them standing is a great way to support wildlife while adding winter interest. A well designed garden doesn’t disappear in winter, it simply shifts into a quieter season. If you’d like help creating winter interest in your garden, or designing a space that looks beautiful all year round, please do get in contact. 🌿 Save this for later 🌼 Follow along for more seasonal garden design tips and wildlife friendly ideas #wintergarden #gardendesignuk #wildlifegarden #seasonalinterest

Weeding sedge in a border! Strategically weeding is not only a therapeutic pass time, but also allows you to creatively consider your garden for the season! ❤️ Learn your weeds to know what adds structure, what helps pollinators and what helps fill your border! You may just want to leave some after all 😊🌸🌱 #gardening #weeding #gardentips #plants #pollinators
Winter Garden Design Series – Part 6: Catkins Catkins are one of nature’s most effective pollination devices. These soft, dangling tassels you’ll spot on trees in late winter aren’t just decorative — they’re designed to release pollen on the breeze, feeding early pollinators and ensuring successful reproduction. So adding them to your planting scheme for winter interest also has an ecological benefit. Consider: • Hazel – Corylus avellana • Twisted hazel – Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’ • Red filbert – Corylus maxima ‘Red Filbert’ • Silver birch – Betula pendula • Weeping silver birch – Betula pendula ‘Tristis’ • Goat willow (pussy willow) – Salix caprea • Willow – Salix gracilis ‘Mount Aso’ • White willow – Salix alba • Alder – Alnus glutinosa • Hornbeam – Carpinus betulus Some of these grow into sizeable trees, so always check ultimate height and spread before planting. And if they’re too large for your space, enjoy the catkins in hedgerows, parks and in the wild instead. Save this for when you’re planning winter interest in your garden. Parts 1–5 of the Winter Garden Design Series are already on my grid if you’d like to build an interesting and beneficial winter garden. #wintergarden #gardendesignuk #wildlifefriendlygarden #plantingdesign
🌾 Even in winter, your garden can still have beauty and texture. One of my favorite plants for year-round interest is Miscanthus Maidenhair Grass. It turns a gorgeous tan color, produces beautiful seed heads, and adds so much structure through every season. ✨ Easy to maintain 🦌 Highly deer resistant (here in Northeast PA) 💐 Great for dried arrangements too 💚 If you’re a beginner and want step-by-step guidance, my Gardening Course for Beginners will help you build a thriving garden with confidence — no guesswork required. 👉 Link in bio to get started.
Our Head Gardener, Ashley @plantsforwellbeing, is here with his 3 essential steps to prep your beds for planting 🌱 1. Remove perennial weeds that compete with and smother other plants, dig out the roots to stop them coming back. But try to leave any wildflowers, as they support pollinators and boost biodiversity. 2. Loosen compacted soil using a garden fork, working it gently to improve drainage, airflow, and root penetration without over-disturbing the soil structure. 3. Add a generous layer of organic matter like compost or leaf mould. This feeds the soil, improves its texture, helps retain moisture and encourages worms and beneficial microbes. Good prep now will allow for a beautiful display in your garden border, all season long 🌿 #GardenPrep #SpringGardening #HealthySoil
🪴 Think you have a black thumb? You might just be planting the wrong things. In this episode of Down the Garden Path, Jeff Collins of REWILD Landscapes shares something fascinating: 🌱 When you plant native plants… more native plants start to show up. 🌿 The soil already holds seeds. Birds, insects, and animals bring more. And suddenly… your garden starts working with you instead of against you. ✨ The best part? People who once felt overwhelmed are now outside every day, watching their gardens grow from tiny plugs to thriving, living ecosystems. 🎧 To learn more, catch the full episode on your favourite podcast app, or watch it on the Down the Garden Path Podcast YouTube channel! . . . . #EcologicalLandscaping #NativePlants #GardenForWildlife #SustainableGardening #rewildlandscapes #gardenpodcast #GardenAdvice #gardeninspiration #2026gardening #gardeningpodcasts #seasonalinterest #gardendesign #gardening #beginnergardener #landscapedesign #gardenanswers #landscaping #ajax #newcastle #oshawa #uxbridge

One quick garden job you can do now so you’re not doing a much bigger job later! 🌱 If you live in London it’s likely that there’s a sycamore tree near you. Sycamore trees broadcast loads of those little “helicopter” seeds which go everywhere. It’s important to pull these out now while they’re a little seedling, before they’ve put on their “true leaves” - the distinctive maple leaves - as their much harder to get out by then. Pull out these seedlings now and save your time (and back!) later. #GardenDesign #GardenTips #GardenTips #SpringGarden #SpringGardening
Shade Gardening (and how to get it right) Shade isn’t necessarily a problem - nearly all gardens will have a shady area. The secret is planting what actually thrives there. Instead of struggling with sun-lovers, try building a border around plants that enjoy the cool, low light: ✔️ Hostas - bold foliage that steals the show ✔️ Ferns - texture and movement for structure ✔️ Tellima grandiflora - underrated but tough and reliable ✔️ Climbing hydrangea - great for vertical cover and summer flowers ✔️ Box balls - evergreen structure that anchors the planting ✔️ Tiarella - frothy flowers and neat ground cover ✔️ Bleeding heart (Dicentra) - romantic spring colour ✔️ Geranium phaeum - one of the best geraniums for shade ✔️ Aquilegia - delicate spring flowers that drift through borders ✔️ Sarcococca - winter scent and evergreen foliage for year-round interest Mixing structure (box, climbing hydrangea), foliage (ferns, hostas, tellima), and seasonal highlights (aquilegia, bleeding heart, sarcococca) turns the darkest corner into one of the most rewarding spots in the garden. 👉 are there any more plants I should add to my shade border? #ShadeGardening #ShadeLovingPlants #PetePlants #RealGardening #ukgardener
The new borders got their first chop back this weekend. The weeds are already actively growing and now is the main time we do the weeding. The only losses are a couple of Salvias so we'll have to replace these with ones we grew from cuttings last year. Now is a good time to re-evaluate the borders and see if anything needs dividing or moving. #gardening #gardeningtips #perennials #hardyperennials #madaboutgardening
