Come for a tour with Ralph Bristow around The Barwitian Garden.

Today, he shows us around the shade garden .. shade can be such tricky spot to find plants that thrive. But Ralph shows how a lush, shady garden *is* possible with woodland planting choices and attention about the irrigation needs.

You can see this garden in person with @opengardensvictoria on January 10th and 11th 2026.

Keep an eye out for more Ralph garden tours over the next few days.

🌿 Embrace shady planting combinations 🌿 Celebrate the beauty and intrigue of shady planting combinations that can turn a neglected corner into a calm, tranquil oasis. From foxgloves and hostas to heucheras and impatiens, the world of shade-loving plants is an exciting and exclusive group. Consider the dramatic contrast of tall, graceful ferns swaying alongside delicate astilbes in shades of pink and white. Add a touch of whimsy with variegated hostas and their mesmerizing textures. Experiment with textures, heights, and colours to create a harmonious blend that will add depth to your green sanctuary. 🌿 Inspired by @charliehawkes_’ Chelsea garden we’ve chosen some of our favourite shade plant combinations. Some of which, we grew here on the nursery. We’ve found the closest matches to the plants. 1️⃣ Phlox divaricata ‘Chattahoochee’, Beesia calthifolia & Melica altissima ‘Alba’ 2️⃣ Astrantia ‘Shaggy’ & Melica altissima ‘Alba’, 3️⃣ Saxifraga × urbium & Dryopteris erythrosora var. prolifica 4️⃣ Aquilegia ‘White Barlow’ & Euphorbia robbiae 5️⃣ Polygonatum verticillatum ‘Giant One’ & Anthriscus sylvestris ‘Ravenswing’ If you have a shady spot that needs some love visit our link in bio for shady plants. #shadygarden #plantsforshade #gardeninspiration #shadyplantsforshadyplaces

If half or more of your garden is shaded… Get these plants… your shady garden will thank you for it 💚
You might think shade is a problem – but it’s one of the best places to garden. 🌿 Moist, sheltered spots create calm, natural planting that shines when sun borders fade. Here are 10 must-dos when planting a shade garden: 1️⃣ Know your shade – full, partial, or dappled. It makes all the difference. 2️⃣ Work with moisture – damp shade loves ferns and hostas; dry shade needs tougher plants like epimediums. 3️⃣ Improve the soil – add compost or leaf mould to build structure and retain moisture. 4️⃣ Plant in groups – repeat textures and tones for calm, woodland rhythm. 5️⃣ Layer the planting – use tall perennials, groundcovers, and low shrubs to add depth. 6️⃣ Brighten with foliage – variegated or silver leaves lift dark corners. 7️⃣ Choose subtle colour – whites, blues, and soft pinks glow in low light. 8️⃣ Add spring bulbs – snowdrops, wood anemones, and narcissus love early shade. 9️⃣ Keep the mulch thick – helps moisture and deters weeds. 🔟 Be patient – shade gardens take time to knit together and mature beautifully. Some of the most peaceful corners of a garden are the ones the sun forgets. #ShadeGarden #PetePlants #RealGardening

Hi, I’m Kim Retired teacher, master gardener (a term we use loosely 😆), and forever planting “just one more thing.” This is me doing what I love most - digging in the dirt, talking plants, and figuring things out as I go. If you’re new here, welcome to Shadyhill garden! Thank you for growing along with me. 💚 A special thanks to @mylittlesliceofhappy for the reminder that sometimes we need to pause and introduce - or reintroduce - ourselves. Sending new year prayers and good wishes to all of you from beautiful, snowy Michigan. ❄️ What’s the weather like where you are? #shadyhillgarden #gardenintro #meetthegardener #midwestgarden #zone6garden #shadegarden

Shady border transformation 🌱 ⠀⠀⠀ AD | Gifted 🌸 ⠀⠀⠀ This little area here is close to a huge hedge and to the right of my Vegepod so it gets barely any sun. I haven’t grown much here previously as I wasn’t sure what plants liked shade, so It looked bare and sad 😢 ⠀⠀⠀ I came across Lizzie @therosepressgarden and took inspiration from her beautiful borders! Including shady ones!! ⠀⠀⠀ As you can imagine I was super excited when Lizzie very kindly sent me some essentials to get me started! 😍 I had 2 x pink Astilbe bare roots, 1 x pink Bleeding Heart bare root, 2 x white Hosta bare roots and lots of pink Forget Me Not seeds! ⠀⠀⠀ The border is all planted up and looking a lot better than it did! I can’t wait to see what it looks like later this year and especially next year. I really think it will be at its best next year, when the plants are more established! I will of course continue to share updates 😍 ⠀⠀⠀ I just need to keep on top of the pesky slugs and snails as they love damp shady areas and especially Hostas!! ⠀⠀⠀ Do you have any shady areas in your garden? Like me, were you unsure what to plant there? If so, head over to Lizzie’s website (as she’s done a lot of the hard work for us!) and have a look at the “Shady Garden” section! ⠀⠀⠀ • ⠀⠀⠀ • ⠀⠀⠀ • ⠀⠀⠀ • ⠀⠀⠀ • ⠀⠀⠀ • ⠀⠀⠀ #shadyborder #shadygarden #shadelovingplants #flowerborder #flowersmakemehappy #gardening #transformation #beforeandafter #flowerpower #flowermagic ⠀⠀⠀ #gardener #gardeninspiration #allotmentgarden #gardenblog #gardenblogger #gardentherapy #ladygardener #growfood #girlswhogarden #growyourown #gyo #vegpatch #harrogateblogger #harrogatelife #organicgardening #seedlings #ecofamily #growyourownuk
