What Happens When You Choose Baked Cod Instead Of Raw Clams During Pregnancy?
Raw clams are not recommended during pregnancy because they may contain harmful bacteria, viruses, or parasites, including Vibrio species and Norovirus. These organisms can cause foodborne illness, which may be more serious during pregnancy. Shellfish should always be cooked thoroughly before eating.
Baked cod is a safe, low-mercury fish when fully cooked. It provides high-quality protein, iodine, vitamin B12, selenium, and other important nutrients that support your baby's healthy growth and development. Cod is also naturally low in mercury, making it a good seafood choice during pregnancy.
Choosing fully cooked, low-mercury seafood instead of raw shellfish helps reduce the risk of foodborne illness while allowing you to enjoy the nutritional benefits of fish. Aim for 2–3 servings of low-mercury fish each week as part of a balanced pregnancy diet.
Baked Cod:
✔ Low In Mercury
✔ Rich In Lean Protein
✔ Good Source Of Iodine & Vitamin B12
✔ Safe When Fully Cooked
Raw Clams:
✔ May Contain Harmful Bacteria, Viruses & Parasites
✔ Higher Risk Of Foodborne Illness
✔ Not Recommended During Pregnancy
✔ Always Choose Thoroughly Cooked Shellfish
Remember, no single food determines pregnancy outcomes. Overall dietary patterns, food safety, and balanced nutrition are what matter most.

Happy #SeaOtterAwarenessWeek! In this video, you can see and hear sea otter Pumpkin breaking crab shells on rocks. Sea otters are among the rare mammals known to use tools. Using rocks to crack open shellfish is a skill they learn and refine throughout their lives. This behavior is essential to their survival as they need to eat up to 25% of their body weight in food every day to stay warm in cold waters.

Most shellfish stay put when danger approaches. Scallops do something completely different. When threatened by predators such as starfish, they can rapidly clap their shells together to propel themselves through the water.
Each powerful clap forces a jet of water out from between the shells, creating short bursts of movement that help the scallop escape. While they cannot swim long distances, they can move surprisingly fast when survival is on the line.
Scallops also have dozens of tiny blue eyes lining the edge of their mantle, allowing them to detect movement and approaching predators. Combined with their unique jet-powered escape, they are among the most remarkable shellfish in the ocean.

Think oysters are the only shellfish worth shucking? Think again.
Today we had the chance to learn from Shucker Paddy, a Guinness World Records shucker, as he showed us how to shuck the perfect PEI hard-shelled clam (quahog).
With a little technique and the right touch, these sweet, briny clams open to reveal one of the freshest tastes of PEI’s cold waters. It’s another delicious reminder that our Island is home to so much more than world-class oysters.
Would you try a freshly shucked PEI clam?
