Huskies and husky mixes like Xena and Memphis here (littermates from a Husky X Shepherd pairing) are beautiful. It’s easy to see why people would be drawn to their stunning coats and wolfie appearance, but the truth is that too few people are prepared for what it takes to raise a husky or a husky cross. Huskies are a very independent breed, are stubborn, and are prone to destructive tendencies if not physically exercised, and mentally stimulated - BOTH are equally important.
The sad truth is that huskies are one of the most exploited breeds by back yard breeders, and one of the most prone breeds (or mixes) to be given up to a shelter, or abandoned.
Before considering any dog, please do your research. The shed life isn’t for everyone, and it’s a real reason why those who value their furniture, clothes, and living spaces give up their huskies.
Another reason is their stubborn nature and their exercise needs. Training is ongoing everyday, and some husky crosses (especially those with low-content wolf thrown in the mix) can be make daily life a struggle for even the most dedicated owners.
If you’re considering a husky, but have never kept one before, please reach out to a breed-specific rescue who can do their best to explain to you everything you need to know (good and bad) about huskies.
There’s no such thing as a bad dog. But mismatched energies and lifestyles are a real thing. And ultimately, the dog pays the price.
