Every winter, humpback whales make their way to the Silver Bank in the Dominican Republic — a key breeding ground where they gather to mate, give birth, and raise their young. Recently, a research effort led by the Caribbean Cetacean Society brought structured monitoring directly into a whale-watching program, working alongside Aquatic Adventures and operating aboard the Turks & Caicos Explorer II. Over the course of a week, the team conducted fixed-point monitoring sessions and documented dozens of sightings, including individual whale identifications through fluke photography — helping build a clearer picture of movement, behavior, and connections across the region. For us, it’s exciting to see this kind of work come together and to play even a small part in supporting it. Time, presence, and focused observation from the experts all working in sync — helping advance our understanding of these magnificent animals and how to better protect them.
