If you want canyon and mountain views you can’t get from the road, this is one of the best days you can spend in Colorado. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad runs about 45 miles each way along the Animas River through the San Juan Mountains, with steam engines, open‑air cars, and views that honestly made me a little emotional. The full trip is roughly 3.5 hours each way, plus a 2‑hour stop in the old mining town of Silverton for lunch and exploring. Tickets usually start around $118 per adult for the round trip and go up from there depending on the car you choose. A few quick tips from our ride: – Choose an open‑air gondola car if you like fresh air and unobstructed views – Sit on the “river side” (right side heading from Durango to Silverton) – Sit toward the back for less noise and smoke and better photos of the train – Bring layers, sunglasses, and maybe earplugs if you’re sound‑sensitive – Know where you want to eat in Silverton before you arrive; it gets busy fast I’m not a train person, and this is still my favorite Colorado experience. Unfortunately… this hike ruined all the other hikes for us.. 🤯🇺🇸🥾 . 📍Ice Lake and Island Lake via Ice Lake Trail, located in the San Juan Mountains near Silverton, Colorado. This amazing hike takes you through colorful wildflower meadows, past flowing streams, and up rocky slopes to two bright blue lakes that look like something from a dream . ⛰️ The trail is about 8 miles round trip with around 2,700 feet of elevation gain. It starts at South Mineral Creek and climbs steadily. First, you’ll reach Ice Lake, a bright blue lake surrounded by granite rocks. Then, a short but steep climb takes you to Island Lake, just over the ridge, where the water is so turquoise it almost doesn’t look real . 🥾 The hike is moderate to hard because of some rocky parts and the high altitude, so take your time. The best months to visit are mid-July to early September, when wildflowers bloom and most of the snow has melted. Even in summer, it can be cold because the lakes sit above 12,000 feet . 🌼 Along the way, you’ll see fields of colorful wildflowers like columbine, lupine, and paintbrush. The lakes get their bright blue color from tiny bits of glacial silt floating in the water, making them look so unreal . 🚙 You won’t need a 4WD to get to the trailhead even if you will be driving on a dirt road. Start early to avoid crowds, found a parking spot and catch the best light. We started our hike at 5.30 AM . As a professional skier people love to categorize you. Big mountain. Freeride. Park. Racing. But I don’t see it that way. I want to be a ski mountaineer. Old alpine ski racer. Ski joring belt-buckle winner. Ski cross experimenter. Big air cliff chick learning tricks. Backflip thrower. Banked slalom ditch champ. Groomer ripping, all-mountain shredder. And a committed bump skier (especially in corn my fav). Why pick just one? Skiing is creativity. Skiing is expression. Ski everything. Try everything. This goes for everything in life.
