Some moms see a sensory bin and think:
“Absolutely not. That’s a mess waiting to happen.”
But here’s the thing…
Sensory bins aren’t about perfection.
They’re about exploring, scooping, pouring, and imagining.
And if your kid only plays for two minutes?
That’s still two minutes of hands-on learning, creativity, and play.
And after repeated practice and stamina built playing with sensory bins ... It's how I get dinner on the table.

If you’re drowning in toys may I suggest…
Checking your pantry? 😅
Sensory play keeps my kids entertained more than any other toy. It’s cheap, reusable, and open ended which is perfect for big imaginations.

So many people struggle introducing or getting their kids to actually use a sensory bin. These are some things that have helped us (and it’s truly become a GAME changing activity for us!) it’s something I always have set up and I pull it out when I know they need some independent play time!
1. Theme: always have a theme! It gives their imagination a starting point!
2. Colors: have lots of them! More fun and more inviting for a child!
3. Textures: the more the merrier! Pom poms, silk flowers, rice, beans, cereals, squishy toys, hard toys, etc!
4. Input: listen to your child or notice their interests and create a bin around that!
5. Tools: bring in new scoops or pinchers to make it more fun!
6. Practice: it’s really a skill that requires practice, especially if you want them to do it independently. You’ll likely need to do it with them for a while before they’re ready to do it alone!
7. Independence: once they’ve gained the skill, the joy of playing completely independently is quite motivating (at least for my child) so it’s definitely an activity she returns to frequently!
If you’re anti-mess… I get it! But you don’t have to be anti-sensory play.
These are my top tips for dealing with the chaos that can come with these activities. I dread the clean up but have found it’s (almost) always worth it!

Sensory play is an important part of child development, especially in early childhood!
Research shows that sensory play is essential for:
🧮 Practicing skills (dumping/filling, cause and effect, size concepts)
✋🏾 Working on boundaries within play
🧐 Increasing curiosity and sustained engagement with an activity
🧘🏻♀️ Aiding in self-regulation through activities that calm the nervous system
👌🏼 Refining fine motor skills
✨ And it’s FUN! ✨
It doesn’t have to be anything fancy either. Whether it’s sand, water, rice, playdough, leaves and sticks, flour and baby oil - add whatever you have to a bin with a couple cups and toys and your child will love it! 🙃
Don’t be afraid to let them get a little messy - remember, that’s how kids learn!
I love to use sensory play as:
📺 a transition from screen time for my toddler,
💦 a calm way to connect with my sensory-seeking baby,
🍽️ and as a tool for occupying my kids when I need to get the dishes done or dinner made!
I personally enjoy using a theme or holiday to inspire the sensory bins I make (I love me some Pinterest ideas 🙃), but they can be as simple as water and plastic animals or rice and cups.
And there are tons of simple taste-friendly ideas on Pinterest or Instagram for your younger kids!

Childhood wasn’t meant to be spent on iPads.
It was meant for messy hands, curiosity, pouring, scooping, mixing, exploring and discovering how the world works.
Simple sensory play like this is doing far more than keeping your child busy. It is supporting brain development, language, problem solving, creativity and fine motor skills.
And the best part is you don’t need fancy toys. Most of the time you already have everything you need at home.
