Cold sores on the mouth are caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1). After a person is first exposed — often through close contact like kissing or sharing drinks — the virus enters the body and stays there for life. Instead of remaining active, it travels through nearby nerves and becomes dormant (inactive) inside nerve cells, commonly near the jaw area. At certain times, such as during stress, illness, fever, sun exposure, or when the immune system is weakened, the virus can reactivate. When this happens, it travels back along the nerve to the surface of the skin, causing the familiar tingling sensation followed by small fluid-filled blisters.
