And Violet is home forever 💜💜 She stepped out of the trailer in a hurry to get to her new life. I welcomed her to Skydog with a tear in my eye and my voice broke because it’s really hard to see a once wild and senior mare in this sorry state. Her poor feet are flared and cracked, her hips and spine jutting through her dead coat, her mane rubbed off in parts and the saddest part is she’s used to eating dirt to feed herself. That tells me so much. But from this moment forward there is nothing but good news for this mare. The whole team is determined in their goal towards her refeeding, her care, her rehabilitation and all the kind words and deeds she deserves. Born in 1993 on the Sulphur HMA in Utah which is famous for their duns and grullas, who knows where she ended up since she was titled in 1998. Never been ridden for sure and a halter was left on her face for way too many years, leaving an indent mark and the reminder of man’s intrusion on her wild life. I don’t blame her for being spicy, as the hauler and quarantine said she was, she doesn’t like being pushed around and will turn back on you to show you her spirit is still alive and in tact. Her wild spirit has served her well as she’s mustang strong and somehow survived into her 30’s with little if any care or kindness. But all that changed today and I promise you and her, she will know only good days, quiet nights, a belly full of feed, good nutrition to make her summer coat shine, and that light in her eyes, which has dulled from lack of hope, will come back bright and show us all what this old girl is made of. She’s a fighter and you can still see the beauty of her younger years in that strong proud face of hers. I know we can restore her dignity and health, her peace of mind and iron out that worried look on her face as she wonders where she’s landed this time. It’s a place called Skydog and she will know it as home and heaven for the rest of her days now. This was part of 25 minutes of video of me sitting out with these two incredible mares after I threw cookies all around me to tempt them to come closer. I wasn’t sure it would work and I’m going to get all the videos up on Patreon so you can see how the whole process went but I think I was holding my breath for most of it. Speaking quietly, not moving a muscle, just me, a phone and prayers that today Violet might just let her guard down a tiny bit and come closer. She came to us as defensive as Thunder and has never really softened, always protective of herself and now her best friend Marjorie, she would rather charge you than allow herself to be hurt again. But I sat, didn’t make eye contact and sent her a whole lot of love and good intentions and slowly but surely she understood. Inching closer, never taking her coal black eyes off me, Marjorie Morningstar at her hip for moral support and back up. And when she took that first cookie off the dirt I felt my eyes well up with tears for all she had been through and seen and my heart exploded. And it’s not really about the cookie it’s more about their willingness to come close and believe that maybe this time nothing bad will happen and that maybe the two leggeds here are not going to hurt them ever. And what an honor it was and is to have these two old ladies with us and how much I love them. It’s funny as Instagram tells me when I post a video over 3 minutes long they won’t show it to new followers and I know it hurts our algorithm but I don’t care ! This ones for you who understand what this means and it touches your heart too, and maybe someone who doesn’t follow us would just see two old, bedraggled, scarred and scared horses, but to us they’re sacred and represent all that’s good in the world. That we saw them and saved them and gave them their peace and dignity back for as long as they shall live. They were both thrown away into the slaughter pipeline in their 30’s, used up and discarded like trash but they’re now our most precious treasure 💜 Thank you for supporting us and them. Dame Violet and Countess Rosa 💜🩷 Just wanted to check in on these two old ladies and let you all know how well they’re doing. Violet continues to eat her mashes like a champ and although her weight has been slower than most it’s been steady and healthy. She’s a lovely lady and has stopped charging people as she’s eventually realized that there’s nothing to fear and that nobody is asking anything of her. No bridles, no halters, no saddles or metal in her mouth, just peace, quiet, a friend, birds singing, shady trees and cool clean water. All we would want for her right here in her special spot where she can watch the world go by, observe Boomer and Libby’s romance and Lightning with his mares Dorothy and Mary, and she has front row seats to Snow and Cheyenne and will be first to meet Snow’s baby through the fence. I will never know where she’s been for most of her life since being rounded up but it wasn’t a kind place and people were cruel to her to make her this defensive of people. I get it Violet and I understand you and the things that happened to harden your heart and lash out at the world, girl do I get it. But I also believe Violet wants to trust, wants to connect and she will it’s just going to take time. This horse is special 🩶🖤 And I know I say that a lot but she still is. She’s transformed over the last few days and has gained weight and strength and an awful lot of personality too. Our quarantine told us she was spicy and would run you up a fence and this week we saw her spirit alive and well. You have to be a little cautious around her, as if she doesn’t want you in her pasture,- she will charge with ears back moving her head up and down as if to say get back and go away. And somehow it makes me love her more. She reminds me of Dream who came to us even more emaciated and one day when I was cleaning her wounds she kicked out at me and tried to bite and I was joyous. It was the first time I had seen her express an opinion and have the strength to give it to me. And I knew on that day she was going to make it. Because we have also seen horses who are just too far gone and can’t fight to make it back and have just laid down and left this earth. It had all taken too much of a toll. But this girl Violet has probably had to defend herself in the past, from people and other horses, to fight for food or to be left alone. And it served her well that fight. When she speaks to me and tells me to leave her alone, I absolutely respect her boundaries totally. She needs to know we want nothing from her and the dropping of food and collecting of bowls and buckets is done respectfully and gently. Violet is not a mean horse, she’s a wild horse, who has been through a lot and only time, consistency, love and patience will convince her that she doesn’t need to fight any more, that those bad days are over and that peace is all she will have from now on. And we are so privileged to give that to her. I think she’s one of the most beautiful horses I have ever seen, she bears the scars of her past and wears them like badges of honor for what she’s endured and survived. I wish she had been able to live her life free as she would have been a fierce lead mare and a smart mother and grand mother. Violet and Rosa 💜🩷 The two old ladies just hanging out under a shady tree enjoying their lives together. They’re such a sweet pair and Violet has definitely settled down a lot since Rosa was added to her life. Because doesn’t everyone do better with a friend to hang out with. Someone who understands you and likes spending time with you. Rosa has taught her patience, gratitude and love and I am really happy for Rosa who didn’t have a true best friend in her last spot. And Violet has done so much eating since she arrived and I love her round belly and the jutting ribs and hips she came with have softened as they slowly were covered with the calories she’s eaten. Just eating, napping and walking to the cool water for exercise to get their steps in and stay active. And it makes me smile to see them and I can’t wait to sit under a tree and watch them when I get back up there. Today was one of our most incredible fundraisers, showing an outpouring of love and compassion for senior mustang mare Violet. Whenever I have a moment of doubt or darkness about the cruelty we witness in this world, days like today reflect the very best of humanity and assure me that there are way more of us than the bad people in this world. Today was proof of that and thanks entirely to today, Violet will be home with us tomorrow and we will get to meet her and demonstrate that people can be gentle and good. I cannot wait for her to climb out of her trailer and for me to utter the words “welcome to Skydog” and mean them from the bottom of my heart for every one of you. We will never know what happened to this mare but she was born wild on the Sulphur HMA Utah in 1993, she was captured on 26th September 1996 when she was just 3 and she was adopted and then titled in 1998. Incredibly this is the same herd Sierra was from who gave birth to Shasta. The places these incredible horses end up breaks my heart for them, both these Sulphur mares landing in kill pens still wild, born decades apart and yet their management has not gotten better in all that time. But today we took action and righted one wrong done to a sweet mare named Violet. And I wanted to post this video of another grulla Lady Grey, her daughter Pipsqueak and friend Bojangles. Lady Grey also came to us emaciated and in poor shape. Today they’re running, bucking, playing on the hill in Malibu showing nothing but joy and good health. So keep this in your mind for Violet cause I want to see her run again too. Sorry but she is so funny and so endearing, even with her warning charges. I love love love that she has an opinion and voices it. Apparently being friends with her best friend Rosa gets me no privileges and in fact is strictly forbidden. But boy does she look better and is only feistier by the day. Who knows where she’s been all these years but she certainly learned how to keep humans away from her and that’s fine. I took some beautiful portraits of her which really reveal her immense beauty even with her skinniness and jutting bones. The vet did say it might be hard to get her back to full weight due to her heart murmur but she is certainly eating well and Rosa seems to have helped with that a lot as she likes to eat with her friend and it’s something Rosa encourages. Violet is a great horse and my hope for her is that she will continue to relax and settle and just get used to the good life even if it includes still chasing people away. I have to say it’s polite and dignified charging as she never gets too close or ever gives the impression she’s going to follow through. It’s just a polite suggestion and I actually believe she find it funny. Like yup I still got it and need to remind these pesky humans who’s boss, even if these ones seem pretty decent. So there’s Violet today, still ornery but a grand dame none the less and treated with respect and kindness by all who come here. I just wanted to share them with you out of interest to illustrate that she’s still a wild mare and with every day she gets stronger she also gets more opinionated. Which is a great sign. Rosa and Violet 🩷💜 Rosa has been on my mind a lot lately due to the fires. She was rescued from the Woolsey fire when her ranch burned down to the ground and she had nowhere to go. We evacuated her from a property on mulholland drive, which was still on fire when we got the horses out. She went blind and her friend Storm suffered from a lot of serious eye issues as well which we believe were caused by being so close to the raging fire. It’s important to remember a lot of the damage from smoke inhalation will show up long after the fire has passed and horses are safe. I loved this moment where Rosa was taking cookies and letting me stroke her, Violet came so close, to figure out what was happening and you can practically hear her thinking and processing what she’s seeing. It’s my hope that Violet will see this, and it will help her even more in dispelling the fear she has of humans. Rosa is a wonderful mare and has done incredibly well being blind. Before she was with Violet she was in with Blue Moon, Lily and Dakoda. But it’s with Violet the dowager duchess that she’s found true peace and happiness. Two old mares living their best life, round and content, looking at life through the fence and enjoying all the comings and goings as people go by their pen to muck and feed. They’re never bored with all the activity and most of the time they’re happily napping under a shady tree next to each other. I am so honored that both of them could find a a quiet good life for their remaining years. Down in Malibu the winds are still raging but we’re doing well and have a veritable army of volunteers and staff going over to see the other horses and donkeys this morning. The Skydog army is going strong and we are a week into this now so my gratitude is immense and I will never forget how everyone came together to help protect and defend the horses and continue to care for them. Rosa and Violet 🩷💜 Rosa has been on my mind a lot lately due to the fires. She was rescued from the Woolsey fire when her ranch burned down to the ground and she had nowhere to go. We evacuated her from a property on mulholland drive, which was still on fire when we got the horses out. She went blind and her friend Storm suffered from a lot of serious eye issues as well which we believe were caused by being so close to the raging fire. It’s important to remember a lot of the damage from smoke inhalation will show up long after the fire has passed and horses are safe. I loved this moment where Rosa was taking cookies and letting me stroke her, Violet came so close, to figure out what was happening and you can practically hear her thinking and processing what she’s seeing. And she’s out 💜❤️ Beautiful senior mare Violet was making it clear she wanted to be out of the barn, so we immediately made that happen for her. No more eating dirt as she has grass a plenty now and friends surrounding her who she calls to and watches tirelessly. Somehow she looks better already and has been rubbing her old coat off with the enthusiasm of someone also shedding their old life and leaving it in the dirt. Maybe she wants to look her best for her new life and circumstances and she’s been trotting up and down the fence checking everything out. We totally treat their recovery from every angle and the mental and psychological is as important as the physical. Whatever makes her feel better inside helps her outside healing too. And she has a lot of healing to do in both areas. We are not going to touch her feet for a bit so she gets to settle without stress and she’s still too emaciated to put in the chute and tip, her feet will start to get better now she’s on dry rocky ground and the blood flow to them improves. Violet is a very special mare and she deserves nothing but the best from this day forward and she has such personality and opinions about everything. She refuses to eat soaked grain or pellets so she’s on a mixture of soft pellets and dry grain which she’s doing well on. She really reminds me of Sarge and Monte and maybe that’s where she will end up. We still have a long way to go and want her to eat her food and monitor how much she’s getting before we add friends. Moving her outside has been the tonic she needed for now and I hope and pray she continues to get stronger every day. I just couldn’t help posting these two again today ☺️ Marjorie and Violet, how many hearts have they cracked wide open with love and compassion for them? Both with the same white halter scars 💔 Did they look at each other and at that moment recognize and understand another soul who was dealt the same hand in life, but survived it. This morning I waited as Taylor brought them breakfast and it was so nice to see them coming a little closer to people who they now trust. Violet is never going to like humans but with Marjorie’s help she’s tolerating us, especially when we bring her delicious food three times a day. And Marjorie’s rub wounds are healing perfectly and we think it’s just a reaction to her finally being able to scratch the itch and get rid of her horrible dirty raggedy coat. But she’s healing and that’s a beautiful metaphor for the changes she’s embracing inwardly and outwardly. I have so much admiration and respect for these two old souls, and they motivate and inspire me every day. To see what they’ve endured and suffered, yet still they greet each morning in gratitude and grace. And how beautiful are their battle scars with a life they never asked for but survived. And now they both have a purpose in comforting each other every day, getting stronger with each others help and friendship. So I hope you don’t mind me checking back in with them again and will indulge me in spending as much time as I possibly can with them.
