Why are the Orionids known to be one of the most beautiful meteor showers?
These showers peak with 10-20 meteors per hour, which can leave trails across the sky that last for minutes!

October is here – and it’s packed with skywatching opportunities ✨
If you know when and where to look, you can spot FOUR evening planets, a potentially bright comet, and even the moon that Europa Clipper will explore when it launches this month!

It's gonna be May 💥
We have a new month of skywatching ahead of us! On May 6, catch the peak of the Eta Aquarid meteor shower early this morning, or spy a few shooting stars two or three nights before the peak event.
Check out a few of our neighboring planets all month long:
Venus: Appears bright and low in the east in the hour before sunrise.
Mars: Easy to find in the west in the first few hours of the night.
Jupiter: Shines brightly in the west all month
Saturn: Begins the month next to Venus, low in the eastern sky before sunrise. Quickly separates from Saturn and rises higher in the sky each day before dawn.

The Helix Nebula, often called the “Eye of God,” is a planetary nebula about 650 light years away. Its resemblance to the human eye reminds us that the universe reflects patterns we see in ourselves.
What you’re looking at is the final breath of a dying star, scattering its outer layers into space just like a cosmic eye staring back at us.👁️

Ever seen the Earth actually rotate?
This stunning timelapse compresses 8 hours and 15 minutes of night into just a few seconds, captured from the mountains of La Palma, Canary Islands — home to some of the clearest skies on Earth.
To make it possible, the creator used an equatorial mount (Star Adventurer) to track the stars and keep them steady, making the Earth appear to rotate beneath them.

What space treats are in store for October? 🎃
This month kicks off with a supermoon on Oct. 6 followed by not one – but TWO – meteor showers.
If you can find some dark skies despite the supermoon Oct. 6 through 10, be on the lookout for the Draconid meteors, which peak on Oct. 8.
For more favorable meteor-viewing chances, watch for the the Orionids on Oct. 21. This meteor shower peaks during the new moon phase, but you’ll still want to try to find some darkness away from city lights for a chance to see a fireball streak across the sky.
