As a math interventionist, I do not work in a traditional classroom! So, sometimes I have to tweak ideas to make them work for me. I have been loving what I have been reading in Building Thinking Classrooms and the first thing I want to implement is more random groupings! By changing the seating arrangement each day, students will naturally have to work with different students in our partner work. This also allows me to work with different students one on one because I will be working with whoever is seated at seat 3! Let me show you some of my favorite ways to do a vowel intensive in my small groups! First up, vowel sticks! Grab some popsicle sticks, print off some vowel cards and glue them together, and you have vowel sticks!! SO simple and your students will love it. I also use a vowel intensive strip and grab my favorite pointers or counters to mark the correct sound. You can make it fancy or make it simple! Do you do sentence dictation in your small groups? It’s the last thing we do but I always make sure we get to it bc it’s SO beneficial 🙌🏻 I dictate a sentence that I know the group has mastered all of the sight words and then add a CVC or CVCE word depending on what they’re currently working on. It gives me time to help guide sentence structure too. Basically we’re always writing in my classroom 🤪 What do you do in your small groups?!
