Snake Road is located in LaRue Pine Hills of the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois. What makes this road unique? It closed twice annually so that snakes can migrate across. Vehicles are prohibited but foot traffic is welcome as long as wildlife isn’t harassed. Over 20 species of snakes can be found here including three venomous pit vipers. Snake enthusiasts (herpers) and wildlife photographers from all over the world run to snake road during migration while others run away. Would you visit this road? 🐍Snake Road🐍 📍Jackson Co, IL . Twice a year, in spring there is a snake migration to and from the limestone bluffs and the swamp of La Rue Pines. Each year the road is closed to vehicle traffic while allowing visitors to walk through and witness the event. Due to the warm weather they have closed the road early, and with a big snake lover in the family we had to check it out. . 🥾The road runs 2.5 miles along the 150-foot bluffs to your left and the Mississippi River Basin to your right making for a really unusual and beautiful landscape and views. Visiting so early we didn’t see any snakes but did see several salamanders. . 🧭There are lots of additional areas to explore in the La Rue Pines and Bottoms area. Some of our favorites include ➕Little Grand Canyon ➕Oakwood Bottoms ➕Holy Boulders ➕Grand Tower riverfront/Devils Backbone . This is a must-see pass in the Dolomites! Not only is the drive with its stunning panorama worth it, but you should definitely plan a stop here. Passo di Giau is a high mountain pass that connects Cortina with Colle Santa Lucia and Selva di Cadore. We only spent one night here but could have easily stayed longer, as it’s also a beautiful hiking area. Passo di Giau Highlights: 🐍Snake Road (Strada della Serpente) from Cortina 🥾Cinque Torri Hike (also popular with climbers) – 9.5 km loop, 3-4 hours ℹ️Cinque Torri Open-Air Museum – WWI trenches and pathways 📸Photo Spot: Ra Gusela pond of reflection (just 5 mins from the parking lot) Coordinates: 46.4817126, 12.0619580 🥾Hike to Lago delle Baste – 6.5 km, about 2.5 hours 🚐Overnight Parking – tolerated even in August 🧣Nights get very cold, even in August . .
