Socialisation isn’t about letting your dog meet everything. It’s about teaching them to remain calm around everything. You don’t need your dog greeting every person. You don’t need them playing with every dog. You don’t need them interacting with every stimulus. What you do need is a dog that can exist neutrally around the world. Neutral around other dogs. Neutral around people. Neutral around traffic, noise, movement, and distractions. That’s real socialisation. Not interaction. Desensitisation. Socialising your puppy isn’t about letting them interact with everything. It starts with foundations. Before anything else, you want a simple sit and some level of control on the lead, so your puppy can stay calm and focused around distractions. Then you need to reframe what socialisation actually is. It’s not about constant interaction… it’s about desensitisation. Your puppy seeing new people, dogs, and environments… and staying calm. That’s the goal. And finally, go at your puppy’s pace. Don’t rush it. Don’t overwhelm them. Slow, controlled exposure builds confidence properly. Everyone thinks that Puppy Socialisation is getting your puppy to meet as many other pups and dogs as they can in their “critical period window”. That’s is THE quickest way to create a pup that is either over excited, or overwhelmed by dogs, and a fast track to reactivity. Socialisation is controlled exposure to your pups everyday environment. Think: Different age and size people. Loud machinery Trucks, cars, motorbikes, planes, bikes, scooters. Different animals. Men in high vis! People with hats, beards, funny limps or crutches and wheelchairs. If we can let puppy be exposed to these things, in a calm and safe manner, they put those things in their little puppy memory bank, they create a neural pathway so when they are exposed to them in the future, it’s not scary or startling. They become more confident, resilient, and stable adult dogs. They don’t have to meet everyone and everything. Yes, Moose met the workman in this video, he was nice and calm, and it was the perfect opportunity, so we made the most of it, and then wandered on. Socialisation isn’t heading to the dog park and completely overwhelming your puppy. I know people will come at me in the comments about how much their dog loves the dog park. Good for you.
