Most species are late-season pollinators, which is key to get insects and birds through the season with enough energy for their needs. I attended an event recently, hosted by @grownativemass and Meredith shared some great information about different goldenrod species and helped distinguish varieties. Shortly after, I visited the @nybg and had an opportunity to chat with Michael Hagen, who is the curator of the native plant garden and the rock garden there. There are so many varieties and I have a few but now I want more. The video clips are from our cottage in New Hampshire and I have brought some of it back to our house to spread around. I have a lot to learn about this plant! Apparently there are over 100 species of goldenrod native to North America, which bloom from summer to late fall. It has a bad reputation with people who have allergies but the source of that is most likely ragweed, which blooms at the same time as some species of goldenrod. Goldenrod 🆚 Ragweed – they don’t even look alike! So much confusion around these two plants. Even when I Google image ragweed, photos of Goldenrod come up 🙃 Goldenrod is a native North American plant with high ecological value. It serves as host plant to several moths & butterflies and also provides a late season food source for many insects. Birds also enjoy the seeds! Yet everyone seems to think it’s the one that causes seasonal allergies. It doesn’t. But Common Ragweed does. Now, Canada Goldenrod is a bully – its spreads through seeds and rhizomes and although it has a great ecological significance here in North America its is a noxious weed in other parts of the world due to its robust nature. For these reasons mentioned I don’t recommend including it in a garden setting as it could take over, but there are many other Goldenrods that are native to NA, valuable to wildlife , well behaved and beautiful! A few of my favs are: 🤍Upland White Goldenrod / Solidago ptarmicoides) – A lovely white flowering Goldenrod that looks like an aster. 💛 Stiff Goldenrod/ Solidago rigida – A clump forming Goldenrod with flat toped clusters of flowers that butterflies adore! This one is also a keystone species here in eastern North America. 💛 Zigzag Goldenrod/ Solidago flexicaulis – A Goldenrod that prefers shade! Adapts even to dry shade and lights up dark garden area. IF some Canada Goldenrod has snuck into your garden, I suggest letting it bloom to support all the little creatures but remove the blooms (and plant) before it goes to seed so you don’t have a Goldenrod problem next year. But if you have some wilder areas on your property, just let it stay.
