Madeline Kahn: Her 90s Era — and fully participating in the social media trends of the 2020s: #whatwereyoulikeinthe90s 📍Event: Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall concert, 1992. 🎶 Song 🎩👰🏻‍♀️💍💐: “Not Getting Married Today” from Stephen Sondheim’s Company is considered one of the fastest and most difficult patter songs in musical theatre. It features rapid-fire lyrics, including 68 words in 11 seconds, often cited alongside “Guns and Ships” (from Hamilton) as the fastest Broadway song. Although many esteemed performers have belted out the rapid-fire song over the years, Madeline has been deemed the unofficial favorite based on the comedic subtleties and nuances she adds to the performance, especially when she declares, “I’m not well, so I’m not getting married.” The late Linda Lavin asked me to let this Madeline-Kahn fan audience know that her “Vera” sitcom co-star and friend, the late Beth Howland, was the first to perform the song on Broadway in the original 1970 Sondheim production of “Company”. The role of Amy portrays a panicked bride having a musical nervous breakdown, even though she’s lived with her fiancé for years. Paul storms off. Almost immediately after her panic attack, she promptly runs off to find Paul and marries him after all. Key Details About the Song: * Context: The song style is called a “patter song”. This song is about a manic bride’s rant about not being ready for marriage. * Difficulty: It is known for lacking room to breathe, demanding intense diction, breath support, and comedic timing. * Speed Comparison: While “Guns and Ships” has a slightly higher words-per-second rate (approx. 6.3), “Not Getting Married Today” is often considered harder to sing due to the sustained, breathless speed without musical breaks. When Gaten took on the role of Tobias Ragg in the 2023 Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd, “Not While I’m Around” became the show’s emotional anchor. This song is notoriously difficult because it requires a delicate balance of childlike innocence and fierce, protective urgency. Gaten’s performance was specifically praised by Sondheim purists because he didn’t just sing the notes…he used his Broadway roots to tap into the “Protector” energy that made his character, Dustin Henderson, so beloved, creating a bridge between his two most iconic worlds. ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ 1. Her dressing room door was always open, a quiet invitation for conversation, laughter, or a gentle moment between scenes. 2. Just inside that doorway sat a jar of candy, placed where anyone passing by could reach in for a small bit of sweetness. 3. She gave the most beautiful, thoughtful cast gifts, never perfunctory, always chosen with care, the kind that made you feel truly seen. 4. She treated every person in the company with the same grace and respect, whether a leading player, a swing, a dresser, or a stagehand. 5. And the most extraordinary thing of all: the legend was real. Angela Lansbury was everything you hoped she would be…gracious, generous, deeply kind, and the consummate professional. I was fortunate to work with Angela Lansbury on the Broadway revival of A Little Night Music. I think of her often and the example she set. Her kindness, the discipline, the humanity she carried into a rehearsal room. Other great artists like Stephen Sondheim, Bernadette Peters, Elaine Stritch, some still with us and some gone, created standards, artistry, and generosity that live quietly inside the work I try to do every day.
