End Result included!🔥 My first „Frozen Pond“-Style glazing using RHC (Running Hot Chowder)!🤩🤩🤩 I was SO excited to finally try this out — and went for the classic combo for outside (Obsidian-based), and a more colorful one for inside (Snapdragon-based). And WOW!! I was SO HAPPY when I opened the kiln!! 😅🥹🥲 I‘m in love with the way RHC flows and expands and interacts with the neighbouring RHC-dots — just an amazing one-of-its-kind-glaze! 🤩😍🥹 And a key ingredient in the „Frozen Pond“ glaze-effect popularized by Kathy McGuire (@klm4655 👏🙌🤩🙏). ———>***GENERAL RHC information: FYI, apparently, it is very common… 1) …to have partial phase separation with glaze solids on the bottom, even in a fresh RHC-bottle! 2) …for the glaze to be VERY THIN/ liquidy, even when fully homogenized! Shaking does NOT suffice to homogenize the glaze — but breaking up the solid chunks with a spatula, squishing them against the wall, and a lot of stirring did the trick for me (some people use a hand-held mixer, alternatively). However, the glaze STILL remained pretty thin — ok for horizontal, but not for vertical application! I had to thicken the glaze a bit — by evaporation (portion in open container + fan for several hours). Keep in mind that once significantly thickened, what is generally given in instructions as „2x RHC“ often means then just 1x thickened RHC‼️🙂 Credit for this information goes to @huebnerpottery , with specific tipps on how to handle RHC in their newest video on youtube! 👍🙏❤️ (I did not add the suggested Epsom Salt = Magnesium Sulfate Heptahydrate, for now. It worked also without it — I will just check for sedimentation before usage every time 🙂). Which one is your favorite? -Test bowl is Standard 240 clay, 3 layers of each glaze, fired to cone 6 with 8 minute hold. *Lower half inside bowl is dark drown engobe and lower half of exterior of the bowl is black engobe to show off how these glazes will look on different color clay bodies. Here’s how I prevent drippy glazes from running too far🌺✨ I love using flux and spectrum floating glazes, but i used to worry about them running off my piece and ruining the kiln shelf. I’ve come up with a process to prevent this and it works every time! . What you’ll need: - painters tape - Wax resist - a bisque “cookie”/coaster if desired. . First use the painters tape and cover the bottom 1cm of the mug. . Glaze your piece. . Peel off the tape revealing a crisp line. . Use wax resist to protect the remaining exposed bisqueware. . For extra kiln protection, place your item on a “cookie” or bisqueware coaster while it’s in the kiln. .
