I was born with spina bifida. Doctors told my family I would never walk.
I’m 18 now. Two Grand Slam titles. Competing against grown men who have been playing professionally longer than I’ve been alive.
The titles are cool. But honestly that’s not even the point. The point is I never let that diagnosis write my story. That was always going to be my job.
If you’re going through something right now that feels like it has already decided your future, I promise you it hasn’t. The condition doesn’t get to determine the outcome. You do.

For all my new friends here, Hi! My name is Kaylee, but you can call me Slaylee. 💕
I’m a wheelchair dancer living between New York and Los Angeles. I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, spina bifida, and POTS—and I’m here to show you that disability doesn’t mean you have to stop dancing, dreaming, or taking up space.
I’m wheelie grateful you’re here 🖤
Rocker-bottom foot (congenital vertical talus) 🦶🏼 is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by a prominent, rigid convex sole and a prominent, rounded heel. As shown in the video, the foot bends downward in the middle, resembling the curved rocker of a rocking chair. Pathologically, the talus bone is vertically displaced, forcing the navicular bone to dislocate dorsally onto the talar neck.
Seen in:
1. Edwards Syndrome (Trisomy 18): 🧬 The classic, high-yield genetic association, often appearing alongside microcephaly, low-set ears, and clenched fists with overlapping fingers.
2. Patau Syndrome (Trisomy 13): 🔬 Another major chromosomal abnormality associated with severe structural and neurological defects.
3. Neuromuscular Conditions: 🧠 Conditions like spina bifida or arthrogryposis that cause severe intrauterine muscle imbalances.
4. Isolated Congenital Vertical Talus: 🦶 Discovered as an isolated, non-syndromic structural deformity at birth.#internalmedicine #paediatrics #neurology #cardiology #ecg
Mut kennt keine Grenzen 💪✨

📝👇Foot & Ankle Orthoses (FO & AFO) with Functions 🦶
✅ Foot Orthosis (FO) • Supports the arch of the foot
✓ Redistributes plantar pressure
✓ Corrects foot alignment
✓ Reduces pain during standing and walking
✅ Soft Foot Orthosis Function: Shock absorption, pressure relief, and comfort.
✅ Rigid Foot Orthosis Function: Controls excessive foot motion and improves biomechanical alignment.
✅ Semi-Rigid Foot Orthosis Function: Provides both support and flexibility during gait.
Types of Ankle-Foot Orthosis (AFO)
✅ Solid AFO Function: Maximum ankle stability; prevents plantarflexion and dorsiflexion.
✅ Posterior Leaf Spring (PLS) AFO Function: Assists dorsiflexion during swing phase; commonly used for foot drop.
✅ Hinged (Articulated) AFO Function: Allows controlled ankle movement while providing mediolateral stability.
✅ Ground Reaction AFO (GRAFO) Function: Enhances knee extension during stance phase and improves gait efficiency.
✅ Dynamic AFO Function: Assists movement while maintaining stability and energy return.
✅ Carbon Fiber AFO Function: Lightweight orthosis that stores and releases energy during walking.
✅ Supramalleolar Orthosis (SMO) Function: Controls mediolateral instability of the foot and ankle while allowing ankle motion.
💡 Clinical Uses: Foot drop, stroke, cerebral palsy, nerve injuries, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, and gait abnormalities.

Pregnant women should eat choline because it's crucial for the healthy development of the baby, especially the brain and nervous system. Here’s why it matters:
🧠 Brain Development
Choline is vital for fetal brain development. It helps build cell membranes and supports the production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter important for memory and mood.
🔄 Neural Tube Closure
Just like folate, choline helps prevent neural tube defects (like spina bifida) during early pregnancy by supporting proper cell division and DNA synthesis.
👶 Long-Term Cognitive Benefits
Some studies suggest that babies born to mothers with higher choline intake during pregnancy may have better cognitive function and memory later in life.
⚖️ Placental Function
Choline helps the placenta function properly, ensuring nutrients are delivered efficiently to the baby.
🛡 Reduces Risk of Complications
It may also help reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia, a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure.
How Much Choline Do Pregnant Women Need?
- Recommended: 450 mg/day
- Many prenatal vitamins don’t include enough choline, so dietary sources are important.
Good Food Sources:
- Eggs (especially the yolk!)
- Beef and chicken liver
- Salmon
- Milk
- Soybeans
- Brussels sprouts and broccoli (less, but helpful)

I was born with spina bifida. Doctors told my family I would never walk.
I’m 18 now and I’m a professional wheelchair tennis player with two Grand Slam titles.
Here’s exactly how I did it.
1. I found my thing. A wheelchair tennis clinic in Indian Wells. Something just clicked and I knew.
2. I made the decision. In 2024 I went fully professional. No halfway. All in.
3. I got the right people around me. Your environment is everything. The people in your corner will make or break you.
4. I stopped waiting for perfect. The circumstances were never going to line up perfectly for me. They won’t for you either. You just go anyway.
Within two years of going fully professional I won the US Open and the Australian Open.
Find your thing. Make the decision. Get your people. Stop waiting.

Abigail’s spina bifida was diagnosed before birth, and thanks to CHLA’s Fetal-Maternal Center, her mother, Gilda, became the first person in the western U.S. to undergo in-utero fetoscopic spina bifida repair surgery.
Children with spina bifida often face mobility challenges, but this minimally invasive prenatal surgery can double their chances of walking independently. Today, at age 6, Abigail not only walks, she zips around on her scooter!
Six years after pioneering the procedure on the West Coast, the team is marking a major milestone: its 100th fetoscopic surgery for open spina bifida. Read more about how far CHLA has come in advancing spina bifida treatment at the link in our bio.
This is one of the happiest little guys I have ever met in At CHOC. He has some amazing energy. The heart of gold 🧡. Always a treat to see him in Spina Bifida Clinic.
