Dancers… still holding a passive stretch to get your split? Not getting any further? Maybe it’s your training method. Flexibility alone isn’t the problem. Most of the time, it’s a lack of strength and control at your end range. If your body can’t actively hold the position, it won’t let you go deeper into it. Your nervous system also plays a role. If it doesn’t feel safe or in control, it will stop you going any further. That’s why we need to train strength, control, and mobility together not just sit in a stretch and hope for the best. If you want your splits to actually improve, you need to start owning the position not just reaching for it. JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN DO THE SPLITS ON THE FLOOR IT DOESNT MEAN YOU CAN DO A FLAT SPLIT LEAP IN THE AIR OR HOLD YOUR LEG UP AGAINST GRAVITY! 📣📣📣 You need the STRENGTH to hold your leg up and STRENGTH to jump high enough to be able to split your legs in the air! Prep for side leaps- technique is so important. Training your quads and hip flexors is really important to achieve your flat or over split box 💕✨
Including flexibility into my dance It’s a practice that I am researching right now Also adding certain textures Helps me to connect with a character Can you relate with that? Let me know
I spent YEARS stretching trying to get a flat middle split… and honestly, I thought it just wasn’t possible for me. I was told my hip structure was the problem. But here’s what I’ve learned 👇 Tight hip flexors are often actually WEAK hip flexors. Stretching alone won’t get you there. You need mobility + active stretching to truly increase your range. And most importantly… consistency. A little bit of work every day contributes to progress over time. Wearing- @musclerepublic 🤍 #dance #flexibility #dancetraining #strengthtraining #danceeducation
Thank you for this excellent question @jesseashdon! Hope this makes sense and explains why I think rotating the leg without weight bearing is actually safer than externally rotating the feet. Let me know your thoughts down below. Follow for more and remember to practice for many years.
If stretching was enough, it would have worked by now 👇 Static stretching isn’t bad; it’s a helpful entry point to help you gain access to a larger range of motion. But if you stop you there, you will never build up the capacity you need to be able to use and control your flexibility while you’re dancing. Strength training — and this includes both general AND end-range strength — is how you can bridge the gap between your passive and active range of motion. Some might call this mobility (I’m personally not a fan of that terminology, but that’s a convo for another day 😂) The point is that on its own, stretching is NOT ENOUGH for the demands of dance. If you feel stuck — you’ve hit a plateau and your hard work isn’t translating into the studio — stretching more is not the answer. If you want new results, you need new methods. 🩰 Message me for info on a custom training program for your dance goals ✅
If your kicks aren't improving, stretching isn't the answer. Most dancers don't lack flexibility they lack strength and control where it matters Train like an athlete ⏩ perform like one Comment "dance" if you want to train like one
Dancers, just because you can do the splits or lift your leg with your hand... doesn’t mean your body can actually control that range. Here’s what that means: You can hold your leg up with your hand, but it drops when you let go? That’s passive flexibility, your muscles are long enough to get there, but not strong enough to hold it. You have a flat split on the floor but your grand jeté looks low or lacks power? That’s because a split on the floor requires relaxation. A jeté in the air requires strength, speed, and active range of motion, that’s a whole different skill set. Flexibility is your potential and strength is your ability to use that potential ✨
