St Catharines has been hit hard with flash flooding over the last seven days, resulting in many homes becoming flooded. Some of these floods were caused by sewer backups, while others were the result of overland flooding. While we can’t control the weather, there are steps that may help reduce your risk, including proper grading, extending downspouts, installing a backwater valve or sump pump and maintaining your home’s drainage systems. The good news? The City of St. Catharines Flood Alleviation Program (FLAP) may help qualifying homeowners cover up to 90% of eligible flood prevention upgrades, to a maximum of $5,000. I’ve included the link below because this is one of those homeowner resources that’s worth bookmarking. Hopefully you never need it, but if you do, you’ll know where to start. What fresh hell is a this?!? Wildfire smoke is filling the air today in Southern Ontario making it rather odd and unpleasant out there an that’s no great for our lungs. Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is considered a respiratory tonic and can be helpful on days like today. 🌱 Mullein soothes irritated respiratory tissues. Mullein leaves contain mucilage, which forms a soothing coating over irritated mucous membranes in the throat and airways. This is why many people find mullein tea comforting when exposed to dry air, smoke, or after a lingering cough. 🌱 this herb also supports the lungs’ natural cleansing process. Mullein has traditionally been used as an expectorant, helping the body loosen and move mucus so it can be cleared more easily through normal coughing. 🌱 Unlike stronger expectorant herbs, mullein is generally considered mild and nourishing, making it a common choice for longer-term respiratory support during wildfire season, after respiratory illnesses, or for people whose lungs are regularly exposed to environmental irritants. .
