We all have our different ways on how we go about with stamps. I follow a typical collecting progression for my Swiss Pro Juventute semi-postals. But regardless of method, what’s important is to continue improving 👉 cancelled -> find better postmarks (SON) 👉 mint -> improve on centering & grading 👉 postal history -> accumulate covers 👉 specialized -> hunt first/last day; variants How fast you go is also irrelevant, as long as you do not stop. This is the true story of a small printing company in Tokyo & their inspiring president, Grandpa Nakamura. At 73, he decided to create a new kind of notebook after a customer mentioned that regular ones are hard to write in because the center bulges. With his 80-year-old fellow craftsman, they spent 2 years developing a notebook that opens 180 degrees flat. At first, they struggled to sell it & had thousands in storage. Then, on New Year’s Day 2016, his grandchild shared it on Twitter. It went viral, orders poured in, & their unique binding was even patented! Robert is a journalist, consultant, author, editor, and brand builder of projects including @legrandnoirwines in the Minervois and @kavshiri.wine in Georgia. In this conversation, Jason and Robert discuss Robert’s start in his parents’ “accidental” restaurant, how an interest in stamp collecting led to a fascination with wine labels, and how a stint in Burgundy led him to work with @beckywasserman.co and to write for @jancisrobinson. Robert shares the experience of how four decades in wine journalism — including a 20-year stint as an editor for the recently-shuttered Meininger’s International — have led him to call himself “a recovering wine critic” and why he thinks it’s been so hard for wine publications to establish and sustain themselves.
