💥 #pov Wandering around Sterling Ruby’s new NYC show.. We were swept up by the turbulent force of @sterlingruby’s new solo exhibition, ‘Turbines’ @gagosian. In his large canvases, Ruby incorporates painting and collage with vibrant multihued palettes enlivened further by the suggestion of eruptive motion. The cardboard swatches are scattered out towards the edges of the canvas caught up in a tumultuous combination with Ruby’s frenzied oil paint. #W_Frieze 순수미술계와 패션계는 끊임없이 서로를 향하는 사이죠. 협업하는 경우야 곧잘 일어나고, 패션 하우스에서 아티스트를 위한 재단을 설립하기도 하는데다, 이곳에서 저곳으로 커리어를 전향하는 인물도 나타납니다. 하지만 메가 갤러리와 미술관이 관심을 가지는 아티스트 중 자신의 패션 레이블까지 출시할 수 있는 인물은 스털링 루비(Sterling Ruby)가 유일합니다. 그는 패션계에서도 워낙 낯익은 이름이죠. 티모시 샬라메가 부산영화제로 내한할 때 입은 의상이나 라프 시몬스와의 작업으로 스털링 루비를 기억하는 이들은 그의 작업 스펙트럼과 작품을 소장한 유수의 미술관들 이름을 알면 깜짝 놀라곤 합니다. 특히 프리즈 서울과 프리즈 뉴욕 등 아트페어에서 종종 그의 솔로 부스를 목격하면, 대형 추상화를 단 몇 점만 걸어놓은 그 장면이 꽤 카리스마 있게 다가옵니다. 분더샵 청담 건물 지하, 무슨 일을 벌여도 좋을 정도로 넓고 쾌적한 공간인 신세계갤러리 청담에서 9월 5일부터 11월 30일까지 루비의 개인전이 열립니다. 전시 제목이 특이합니다. <먼지 덮인 계단 위 쉬고 있는 정원사(The Flower Cutter Rests on Dust Covered Steps)>. 그의 작품 세계를 아우르는 다양한 장르의 신작들이 40여 점 자리한 전시입니다. 강한 에너지와 카오스가 동시에 느껴지는 추상 페인팅, 경건한 기념물처럼 서있는 총검 조각, 루비의 머릿속을 엿보는 듯한 심플한 꼴라주들, 묵직한 유물처럼 자리한 세라믹 작품들을 눈에 담아보세요. 갤러리로 들어가는 길, 분더샵 입구에서는 국내에서 처음으로 선보이는 루비의 패션 레이블 S.R. Sterling Ruby grows the flowers himself, in his own garden out in Vernon, California, then casts pairs of them in bronze so they never let go. New show at Gagosian in Paris borrows straight from old Dutch still life painting, flowers as a wedding portrait, till death do us part for real. Up through October.

The alliance between Raf Simons and Sterling Ruby transcends the typical designer-artist capsule; it represents a profound, shared language articulated through space, textile, and the runway. Their dialogue began in the late 2000s, manifesting vividly in 2008 when Ruby transformed Simons’ Tokyo flagship into an immersive installation. The artist enveloped the interior in high-contrast paint imagery, using the same treated canvases to construct fixtures and turn the retail space into a full-scale sculpture. This architectural energy seamlessly transitioned into garment design. By 2009, Ruby was applying his studio techniques to Simons’ menswear, creating bleached and chemically treated denim that turned artistic process into wearable texture. The collaboration scaled new heights during Simons’ 2012 debut at Dior. Here, Ruby’s abstract paintings were translated into haute couture textiles through sophisticated printing methods, allowing the artist’s signature color haze to literally form the fabric of the silhouettes. The partnership culminated in the Fall/Winter 2014 menswear season. Released under the joint label “Raf Simons Sterling Ruby,” this was a genuine co-authored collection rather than a mere homage. The pieces merged the ruggedness of American workwear—complete with patches and painted surfaces—with Simons’ precise tailoring. Archivists revere this body of work for its remarkable consistency. From those early retail interiors to the later environmental designs for Calvin Klein, the duo proved that art need not be mere decoration. Instead, through their long-standing exchange, they demonstrated that art can serve as the fundamental material and structure of fashion itself.
