On June 9, 1980, while on a freebasing binge during the making of the film, “Stir Crazy”, Richard Pryor doused himself in rum and set himself on fire. In 1982, he incorporated a description of the incident into his comedy show “Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip”, but in 1980 he appeared on “The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson” and shared the moments right after the incident with grace, gratitude and of COURSE comedy. Richard Pryor was a comic genius. Johnny Carson showed him empathy and compassion as Richard shared his story in this POWERFUL segment from September 1980, JUST 3 months after Richard Pryor’s brush with death. 😍❤️👏👏🎬
🎥 December 12, 1980 — Stir Crazy hit the big screen and had us all rolling with laughter! Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor’s comedic chemistry? Absolutely unmatched. 🍿🔥

This week on Chew on That! I had the iconic JoBeth Williams join me, and what a conversation it was. We talked about her beginnings in theater and the Method, her first starring role in Kramer vs. Kramer and what it was like working alongside Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep, and her experience starring with Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder in Stir Crazy. JoBeth also revealed some incredible behind-the-scenes insights from The Big Chill and other projects that shaped her career. She’s a true legend, full of wit and wisdom, and this interview was an absolute treat—I can’t wait to have her back on!
