Siruvalli Kilangu Wild / Forest Yam One of the fascinating native yams we grow is Siruvalli Kilangu, a traditional wild/forest yam known for its hardy nature and thorny climbing vine. Botanically it belongs to the genus Dioscorea esculenta, a species that has been part of traditional diets in many parts of South and Southeast Asia. Unlike many cultivated yams, Siruvalli grows as a vigorous climber, sending out vines that are often covered with small thorns. These vines climb over nearby trees, shrubs, or supports while the real treasure slowly develops underground — the nutritious yam tuber. For generations, these yams were an important traditional survival and forest food, valued for their ability to grow with minimal care and withstand difficult conditions. The tubers are typically harvested after several months, cooked well, and enjoyed in curries or roasted preparations. What makes Siruvalli special is its resilience. Even in poor soils and harsh conditions, it continues to grow quietly, storing energy underground until the right time. Plants like these remind us of the wisdom in traditional crops — hardy, nutritious, and deeply connected to the land and culture that nurtured them. #OjhusTheHealingForest #WildYam #farmlife

Just sharing a childhood memory. Many of us grew up hearing about this leaf — eaten early mornings, believed to help memory. I recently found this plant near a canal close to my farm. Seeing it again made me realise how many such native plants are slowly disappearing from our surroundings. I’m not making claims. I’m not giving advice. Just documenting what I saw, what I remember, and why I want to grow and preserve such plants on my farm. 🌱 If you know more about this plant, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments. #NaturalFarming #TraditionalPlants #Brahmi #MemoryLeaf #VillageLife IndigenousPlants SustainableFarming HerbalPlants BackToRoots YugandharAgri Village life Naturalfarming india Natural farming andhra Sarswathi plant

Poppat Vaal: The Forest-Belt Heirloom of Chandrapur Poppat Vaal is a little-known yet culturally significant indigenous legume native to the Chandrapur district of Vidarbha. Absent from formal agricultural records and commercial seed networks, it survives through oral tradition, seed-saving, and the quiet stewardship of rural and forest-fringe communities — making it one of the region’s truly hyper-local heirloom pulses. Belonging to the broader vaal (hyacinth bean) family, Poppat Vaal is uniquely adapted to the dry red soils and forested landscapes of Chandrapur. Farmers value it for its hardiness, drought tolerance, and naturally resilient growth, while chefs prize its earthy aroma, gentle nuttiness, and firm texture that holds beautifully in cooking. In regional kitchens, this rare legume is elevated through traditional cooking and carefully balanced spice blends. At Svasara, it becomes part of the lodge’s promise — to introduce travelers to flavors that exist nowhere else but here. @svasara_tadoba #tadoba #svasaracuisine #svasara #eatlocal #foodphotographyandstyling @sanjayramchandran @foodscapes.studio
“The Wild Leaves Chronicles | Episode 1: Ponnaganti Kura” “One of my weekend farm visits led me to a discovery I’ll never forget.” “The lady working in our field offered me a handful of wild leaves — freshly plucked from the lake banks nearby.” “She said they were nutritious, and make an excellent dish — something most of us city dwellers have never even seen.” “These greens grow across Punganur, Kuppam, and Palamaner — part of the Seshachalam hills in the Eastern Ghats.” “Here, the Yanadis, Lambadis, and Irulas — ancient forest tribes — have foraged such leaves for centuries.” “This one’s called Ponnaganti Kura — or Sessile Joyweed — a powerhouse of nutrition with one of the highest iron contents among leafy greens.” “Farm workers cook it simply — a stir-fry with onion, dried chili, and tamarind — rustic, aromatic, full of life.” “You’ll rarely find it in city markets. It’s a taste of the forest… a whisper from the hills.” “We haven’t lost these foods — we’ve just forgotten to look.”
