He was born on March 17, 1980, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. From a young age he was fascinated by severe weather, and this interest eventually led him to study meteorology at the University of Oklahoma, where he later earned a PhD in the field. Timmer became famous for chasing dangerous storms and getting very close to tornadoes in order to film them and collect scientific data.
