Don't just UPDATE your manager, INFLUENCE him/her.
Try the 3-1-1 framework in your next 1:1.
✅ 3 IMPACT updates
✅ 1 key CHALLENGE
✅ 1 GROWTH question
🎯 3 IMPACT updates :
1️⃣ What went well?
👉 Highlight key progress or results achieved since your last discussion
2️⃣ What's the concern?
👉 Convey specific risk, gap or blocker that could impact current deliverable or timeline
3️⃣ What's the next step?
👉Clarify the action you will take or decision needed to keep things moving forward
🎯 1 key CHALLENGE
👉Capture border capability, complexity or structural issue you are navigating
🎯 1 GROWTH question
👉 Cover what you need to improve, build or demonstrate to operate at the next level
This works because it shifts your 1:1 from reporting tasks to demonstrating ownership, clarity, and forward momentum.

Here’s how to communicate like a leader 👇
1️⃣ Keep updates short - what’s done, what’s next, and any roadblocks you might have.
2️⃣ Be consistent - regular updates to keep stakeholders informed.
3️⃣ Flag issues early - it builds trust, not doubt.
Because the best teammate is the one who keeps everyone updated.

If you’re not asking these questions in your 1:1, you’re missing growth opportunities.
1️⃣ Performance clarity
What to say:
“What am I doing well right now, and where do you think I need to improve?”
How it helps:
Removes guesswork. You stop assuming and start adjusting based on reality.
2️⃣ Expectations and priorities
What to say:
“What should I be focusing on more, and what matters less right now?”
How it helps:
Aligns effort with impact. You work smarter, not just harder.
3️⃣ Growth and skills
What to say:
“What skills would help me grow in this role, or prepare for the next one?”
How it helps:
Turns goals into a roadmap instead of vague motivation.
4️⃣ Decision-making and ownership
What to say:
“Where would you like me to take more ownership or make decisions more independently?”
How it helps:
Builds trust. Managers value people who help them move closer to their goals with less supervision.
5️⃣ Feedback frequency
What to say:
“How would you prefer to give feedback, and how often should I check in?”
How it helps:
Prevents surprises. You course-correct early instead of during reviews.
Your growth is your responsibility. Start asking better questions.

The fastest-growing careers aren’t built by chasing job titles — they’re built by compounding the right skills over time.
Across consulting, strategy, leadership, startups, and high-impact roles, the same core skills keep showing up. They travel across industries, scale with experience, and increase your optionality as your career progresses.
In this video, I break down 5 skills that compound across any high-impact career — skills that help you think clearly, communicate better, make decisions under ambiguity, and grow faster no matter where you work.
If you’re serious about long-term career growth, this is where your focus should be.
Follow for practical guidance on consulting, problem-solving, and building careers that actually work in the real world.
Your 1:1s are a waste of time. Here’s why.
If you’re here for the first time, this is Episode 6 of my Corporate Guide series and what actually worked for me.
Most people treat 1:1s like task updates. They talk about what they did, nod along, and leave.
This leads to zero impact on their career.
I used to do the same. Until I realized—1:1s aren’t meetings. They’re your career accelerator.
Here’s the framework I use now to make every 1:1 count:
1. Lead with impact, not tasks.
Don’t say ‘I finished the report.’ Say ‘I finished the report—it helped close the Q1 gap by 15%.
2. Ask the promotion question.
‘What’s the one skill gap between me and the next level?’ This shows ambition and gets you a roadmap.
3. Flag blockers early.
If something’s slowing you down, say it. Your manager can’t fix what they don’t know.
4. Request real-time feedback.
Don’t wait for reviews. Ask: ‘What’s one thing I should start or stop doing this month?’
5. Align on what matters. End by asking:
‘What’s your top priority for me this week?’ This keeps you focused on high-impact work.
1:1s aren’t status updates. They’re your chance to get visibility, feedback, and fast-track your growth.”

Increasing your visibility is not limited to talking more in meetings. It means decision makers don't associate your name with impact. Here's what you actually do strategically.
1) Make your work executive readable. Stop reporting effort. Start reporting impact.
So instead of saying project completed. Say delivered X , reduced risk by y and improved turnaround by z%
Senior leaders track business outcomes, not task volume.
2) Speak at least once per important meeting. Maybe point outer risk provided a date of point or a forward looking suggestion. This will compound your visibility.
3) Send strategic recap after big project or meeting. What outcomes did you deliver and cc stakeholders strategically to create traceability.
4) Build horizontal visibility. Don't bank only on your manager to advocate for you. Build recognition across adjacent teams senior peers project stakeholders.
5) Force specificity if they ask you to increase visibility check where meeting leadership forum cross functional project??
Good work will not speak for you. Please and sure the right people know what you do. Your impact has to be legible to power.

Unprofessional candidate 🆚 Professional candidate 👔
Here’s what professional candidates do differently:
1️⃣ Prepare like a partner:
Research their product, strategy, leadership moves, and challenges so you can speak in specifics.
2️⃣ Treat the interview like a two-way fit:
Show you’re evaluating the role by asking about priorities, success metrics, and the problems you’d be responsible for solving.
3️⃣ Use real leadership evidence:
Share measurable wins, clear strategy decisions, and tangible team impact instead of vague personality claims.
4️⃣ Take accountability for every gap:
Explain setbacks with maturity, show what you learned, and highlight the growth you bring into the role.
5️⃣ Keep your answers tight:
Keep your answers structured, concise, and focused on outcomes rather than long stories or excuses.
6️⃣ Engage with insightful questions:
Ask questions that prove you think like someone already in the seat, especially around goals, challenges, and expectations.
7️⃣ Follow up like a professional:
Send a clear thank-you, restate your fit, confirm next steps, and stay confident and composed.

Most BAs fail not because they can’t analyse…
But because they don’t capture the right requirements. 👀
If you master Requirements, you master the project.
Here’s what separates average BAs from top 1% BAs:
✅ Don’t just “take notes” — elicit real needs
✅ Ask “why” until the business problem is crystal clear
✅ Convert vague ideas into structured, actionable requirements
✅ Validate before development starts
Remember:
Clear requirements = Fewer reworks = Faster delivery = Stronger stakeholder trust.
Every strong project I’ve worked on in consulting started with one thing done right — requirements.
If you’re an aspiring BA, start here.

If you are given this feedback you must get clarity as soon as possible - which stakeholders and in what situations.
Then you fix alignment and not just your delivery.
At times you will have to prewire - have 1 to 1 with key people even before the big meetings that way you build support quietly. I talk about this in my book Starting Strong.
Move sensitive pushpack offline you have to protect egoes in public.
You may be logical and your tone is efficient but the culture can be sensitive so here you need to add framing language from business perspective my concern is risk exposure lower the heat and keep it logical.
Ask for support how would you prefer to be engaged on this.
Stake holder management is rarely about being agreeable it is more about understanding power before you push it.
Good luck 🍀

Your manager says “you’re not strategic enough” but uses your strategy in every planning meeting. Here’s what’s happening.
The pattern:
• Your analysis shapes their decisions
• Your recommendations get presented as theirs
• Your strategic thinking drives the roadmap
• But when you ask for promotion: “You’re not strategic enough yet”
Here’s what’s actually happening:
They’re benefiting from your strategic work while keeping you positioned as an executor.
Because if they acknowledge you’re already operating strategically, they’d have to promote you.
And if they promote you, they lose access to strategic-level thinking at executor-level pay.
This is gaslighting.
You’re being told you lack the exact skill they’re using from you every day.
What to do:
-Stop giving away your strategic thinking for free.
-When they ask for your recommendation, say: “I’d like to present this directly in the leadership meeting.”
-Document your strategic contributions.
-Keep a record: “My Q3 analysis shaped our market entry strategy. My risk assessment prevented a $500K mistake.”
-Make your strategic value visible beyond your manager.
-Contribute in cross-functional meetings. Build relationships with their peers. Make sure other leaders see your thinking.
-Ask the direct question.
“You’ve used my strategic recommendations in the last 3 planning cycles. What specifically do I need to demonstrate to be seen as strategic enough for promotion?”
If they can’t answer, you’re being kept in place intentionally.

This post is about awareness, not to create distrust. It is how the world works. Systems will always protect continuity ,reputation and risk exposure, and that is very normal.
So, don't confuse loyalty with leverage. Being committed is great but the same time you need to be thoughtful about your career and have conversations around what's next for you. Be intentional about your growth compensation and learning.
Build relationships beyond your manager. Influence should not sit in one persons hands.
Separate the structure from self-worth if there is a decision that is business driven. Don't internalize it as a personal failure. learn from it and move forward.
Always protect your performance in writing when you are not clear get clarity on your priorities get a confirmation on all decisions and instructions to be executed in writing and document your scope of work.
Protect yourself by understanding the system. When the benefit is mutual it works. When the benefit is not mutual that's when you need to be strategic about it. But don't wait for a collapse. Always be intentional about your market value opportunities and career direction.
Good luck with your career.
Save for future reference.
