Did you know how electricians prepare and connect thick power cables inside substations or transformer kiosks? ⚡🔧
First, the electrician cuts the heavy cable to length with a large cutter. Then she removes the outer jacket step by step, including the metallic screen and the inner semiconductive layer, until the insulated conductors are exposed in the exact lengths needed. A plastic separator is then added where the cable opens up, so the 3 cores stay neatly guided and protected instead of rubbing against the main cable body.
After that, each conductor is prepared for its connector or terminal, the screen is bonded to earth, and the finished cable end is connected into the equipment. On medium-voltage cables, this preparation is especially important because these cables have several functional layers, and the cutback area must be controlled very carefully so the electric field stays safe and reliable.
Older cable technologies often used oil-filled insulation or gas or air-pressure systems, while modern power cables are much more often based on solid insulation systems.

Most people drive past substations every day without giving them a second thought. A UHV substation operating at over a million volts is something else entirely — the air itself becomes a conductor, and a single undetected fault can trigger a cascade failure affecting millions of people at once.
The engineer here is using a corona discharge detector to find exactly where electrical energy is leaking. When voltage is high enough, ionized air around a fault point creates a faint visible glow, and that tool translates it into something readable so the problem can be found and fixed on live equipment.
Those large spherical conductors aren't there for aesthetics either. They're specifically shaped to distribute the electric field evenly across the surface, preventing the kind of concentrated arcing that would otherwise destroy the equipment instantly.

Many people are unaware that facilities like this exist. This is an ultra high voltage substation, representing one of the most extreme electrical environments engineered by humans.
In these systems, engineers use corona discharge detection to identify energy losses. When the electric field becomes intense enough, the surrounding air ionizes, producing a faint glow that reveals where leakage is occurring.
The large spherical conductors play a critical role by evenly distributing the electric field, reducing points of concentration that could otherwise lead to dangerous electrical arcing.
Ultra high voltage substations can operate at levels exceeding one million volts, where even air can begin to behave as a conductive medium under the right conditions.
Specialized instruments allow engineers to trace corona discharge along energized components, ensuring faults are detected early. In systems of this scale, a single undetected issue can propagate into widespread failures affecting entire regions.

🎥 One Device – Three Functions | 12kV / 24kV Three-Position Vacuum Circuit Breaker
This video demonstrates the operation of our three-position vacuum circuit breaker, designed for modern SF₆-free medium voltage switchgear.
The device integrates three essential functions in one compact unit:
✔ Disconnector
✔ Vacuum Circuit Breaker
✔ Earthing Switch
This integrated architecture helps simplify switchgear design and reduce mechanical complexity.
Key technical parameters
• Rated voltage: 12kV / 24kV
• Rated current: 630A / 1250A
• Short-circuit breaking current: up to 25kA / 31.5kA
• Standard: IEC 62271-100
Typical applications
• Medium voltage switchgear (AIS)
• Ring Main Units (RMU)
• Compact transformer substations
These solutions are particularly suitable for SF₆-free medium voltage switchgear design and modern power distribution networks.
Technical information and drawings are available upon request.

Did you know our substation department plays a crucial role in providing power to our customers? They oversee all substations across the islands we serve, including performing routine maintenance on transformers, handling new installs, and responding to trouble calls.
In a recent blog, Emily Miyashiro, a digital communications and social media specialist, shares her experience going on a ride-along with Chad Oda, one of our substation working foremen on Oahu!
“In December, I had the opportunity to join Chad Oda, one of our working foremen on Oahu, for a substation ride-along where I got a glimpse of what they do each day! Chad has been with Hawaiian Electric for over 20 years, joining the company in 2004 as a journeyman electrician” writes Emily.
“Having this opportunity gave me a deeper understanding for the work our substation department does every day! It was a great reminder that our greatest asset is our people, and their commitment to service is what keeps the lights on for our communities.”
