Is it baby bird season yet? All the planning and number crunching of the winter has us looking forward to the return of BABY BIRD SEASON! In 2025, our 4 nest box networks produced more than 850 fledgling birds! Over 800 of those were Tree Swallows. With increasing occupancy of nest boxes over the course of this project and further expansion planned, will we break 1K birds fledged this summer??? Due to the safety of cavity nesting, Tree Swallow nestlings are able to stay in the nest and develop for a relatively long time: 18-24 days! Fledglings leave the nest fully capable of flight and have even been observed “to disappear into the horizon” on their very first flight. Based on published first year survival rates, roughly 30% of young fledged should survive their first year to return to the breeding grounds. We're eager to see how many of last year's color banded fledglings find their way back to Montana this summer! *All birds handled by trained professionals under the appropriate permits. We measure nestling growth rate by taking mass of the clutch early in development and at banding age (day 9-15)* #ornithology #baby #bird #fieldwork #nest

In those cases, incubators provide controlled warmth and a calm environment that supports recovery. This kind of behind-the-scenes care doesn’t look dramatic — but it’s essential. We’re currently raising funds for an incubator to support wildlife recovery at CWS. More details on how to help are in the comments.
