Sometimes the best family days start with absolutely no plan. 🏕️🚙 We took the Jeep down to the Swift River near Roxbury, Maine, found a secluded spot where we could get right down to the river, and basically made the place ours for the afternoon. Hank immediately decided the Swift River was his personal swimming pool. 😂 At one point I ended up falling in right along with him. Then I got to watch Nikki attempt to pick Fox up for a hug — except at 13 years old, he’s officially taller than she is now. Those are the little moments you don’t realize are becoming memories while they’re happening. And there’s some pretty cool Maine history running through that water, too. The Swift River has been known for placer gold for generations. The Maine Geological Survey calls the West Branch of the Swift in Byron the most popular gold-panning location in Maine, and people still pan it today — including Fox’s grandfather. Fun fact: gold hand-panned from the Swift River was even used in the ceremonial necklace made with Maine tourmaline for the state. That’s some legit Maine gold. 🤘 A little farther down the road is Coos Canyon in Byron, a gorgeous gorge carved into the bedrock by the Swift and one of the area’s best-known swimming and gold-panning spots. But this time, we skipped the crowds. You cannot make another today... It’s not guaranteed, but if we are blessed we will have another tomorrow. But we get older, kids grow up, they move out, our bodies age, things change...there will not be another today. Personally, I feel like things are changing...I feel like I’m finally finding my way forward out of the clouds and headed towards my true north. See Lower Falls Scenic Area: ❄️ Along the Kancamagus Highway, Lower Falls scenic area is where the Swift River gently cascades & slides down a series of smooth granite ledges into a pool. The cascade is only 10 feet though the rapids slide over a wide base. ❄️ Park by the gate at the designated pull off (room for a few cars) and hike past it going right to a (now) snow covered wooden overlook. ❄️ You’ll see the NH White Mountains forest and the main waterfall drop through the snowy ledges. ❄️ It’s .1 mile to reach the overlook. You can also hike down from the visitor center area to the Swift River shore though be mindful there is no visible path and there is a slope down. I have to say — it’s hard to find anything better than a cold mountain river on a hot summer day. We discovered this spot a few years ago and always love getting the chance to come back. (It’s almost 3 hours from our house.) It’s a little piece of paradise! Where’s your favorite place to be on a hot day? Ocean, river, lake, mountains, beach, pool?
