I had been doing really good for a while. But the last few days I was symptomatic and in bed for 2 days. We don’t know what triggered it. I had really bad migraines, fatigue, and pre-syncope. I had planned on spoiling Ryan all day and taking care of him. Plans don’t always go….as planned. Thankfully, I am married to a great man who understand my condition and is more than happy to take care of me, regardless of it being his day🥰 #pots #potsawareness #potssyndrome #spoonie #potsinaction #potsie #potsielife #goodmenstillexist #happilymarried20years

That test felt like torture. I passed out at least five times and never recovered. It was endless pre-syncope which often feels like I am dying. My brain was shutting down, I had tunnel vision the entire time, I could feel my body jerking and twitching. I had so much hope, and that nurse blamed my high heart rate on “panic attacks”. I’ve had some moments of not being listened to but this was such a blow. I am so symptomatic right now I can barely function.

Pre-syncope or near-fainting is defined as a state where you feel like you are about to faint, but you don’t fully lose consciousness.
The common assumption is that fainting is worse than near-fainting.
Whilst losing consciousness is a horrible and very frightening experience, and comes with real safety risks from falling, pre-syncope can be just as horrible, just as frightening, and in some cases just as dangerous.
Many people describe pre-syncope as feeling like you are dying.
Feeling like every system in your body is shutting down.
You may feel like your heart is racing or struggling as your body tries to adjust blood flow.
You may feel like you cannot get a full breath, or like breathing becomes much harder.
Due to reduced blood flow to the brain, you may become confused, light-headed, or struggle to find words or communicate properly.
Reduced blood flow to muscles can make it extremely hard to stay upright, as your body feels weak and heavy.
You may feel like you could vomit at any moment due to changes in circulation and your body’s response.
If it lasts longer, your body may try to correct it by overcompensating.
It can release stress hormones like adrenaline in an attempt to raise blood pressure and improve circulation.
This can cause sudden spikes in heart rate.
It can also cause shaking or tremors as your muscles respond.
You may go from pale, cold and shivery, to hot, flushed and sweaty within minutes.
All of this can change quickly depending on how well your body is able to stabilise itself.
Of course, there are things you can do — lie down, elevate your legs, hydrate, take salt, and try to eat if you can.
Sometimes this passes in minutes, other times it can take much longer if your body struggles to settle. Everyone’s triggers and recovery time can be different.
The core of the experience is this: you are hovering just above consciousness, fully aware, but not quite fainting — stuck in that space where your body feels like it might switch off.

Syncope can be challenging, but a systematic approach makes the diagnosis much easier.
Start by ruling out dangerous cardiac causes, then assess for orthostatic hypotension, and finally consider vasovagal or unexplained etiologies.

☝🏼If you’re feeling drowsy, fatigued, this is the reset button to stimulate alertness.
☝🏼If you have a lot of sinus congestion, this will open up the nasal passages.
☝🏼If you suffer from acute back pain, this will help ease the pain to help you move.
☝🏼If you want to wake up your boo from a deep sleep, this is the one. 😈
💦 Acupuncture point DU26 (Shui Gou (水溝)) aka “water trough” has historically been used to revive consciousness from fainting in emergency situations.
Save this, you never know when you’ll need it. ♥️
Safe for kids and those who are expecting 👧🏻🤰🏻

POV: You’re the caregiver to a Marine who has syncope and has been specifically told NOT to bend down… but apparently changing the dryer plug is a matter of national security. 😭🇺🇸
“Dad, PLEASE get up.”
Him: “I got it.”
Sir. Respectfully. YOU DO NOT GOT IT. 😭🎷🎷🎷

NGL he in fact did HAVE it but I intervened of course. I wasn’t trying to spend my Sunday at the VA hospital. He is the epitome of “Want something done do it yourself” 🥴

🩺 Case Follow-Up: The Diagnosis
A young woman developed:
• Recurrent syncope
• Intractable vomiting
• Severe abdominal pain
Over the following months she underwent:
• 4 CT scans
• Multiple hospitalizations
• 2 surgeries
• Extensive negative workups
• A psychiatric evaluation
Yet the diagnosis remained elusive.
After returning home to the UK, a different imaging modality finally provided the answer—and her symptoms ultimately resolved following treatment.
One of the biggest lessons from this case: when the clinical picture doesn’t fit, sometimes the next step isn’t repeating the same test. It’s asking a different question.
