Rather than building phrases, the music lingers on single gestures—bending pitches, fading attacks, and isolated breaths—creating a sense of suspended time. Bach or Takemitsu? 🤔 In “Gardener of Time,” Toru Takemitsu (1930–1996), explains his compositional philosophy: “My music is something like a signal sent out to the unknown. Moreover, I imagine and believe that my signal meets another’s signal and the resulting physical change creates a harmony different from the original two.” Takemitsu’s Folio III (1974) blends his style with Johann Sebastian Bach’s (1685–1750) music. This final piece in a series of three for solo guitar includes a quote from Chorale No. 72, “O Haupt, voll Blut und Wunden” from Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (1727). In Folio III, Takemitsu doesn’t fully transform Bach’s chorale into his own style. Instead, he creates a unique unity where traditional tonality and modern post-tonality coexist. The result is a harmonious blend that’s neither entirely Bach nor entirely Takemitsu, neither purely tonal nor purely chromatic. Full piece in the @omniconcerts concert link in bio!
